EE 1310 - Signals and Communication

Instructor: Prof. Mohammed Zafar Ali Khan.

Handout 2: Assignment 1
Due date: 21-09-2017 before Thursday class.

Concepts covered: Signals, classification of signals, causal-acausal, continuous-discrete, opera-

tions on a signals, periodic-aperiodic, odd-even, power-energy.

1. Go through the IEEE signal processing society web-page (https://signalprocessingsociety.org/our-

story/signal-processing-101) on the introduction of signal processing and write about any of
the applications of signal processing you find interesting.

2. Download any .mp3 file from the web.

(i) Plot the corresponding Discrete Time (DT) signal say x[n].
(ii) Plot y[n] = x[2n]. Save the DT signal as .mp3 file. Hear both the files and comment on
the differences you perceive.

3. Consider the discrete-time signal, which we refer to as x[n]:

(a) Sketch 3x[n], x[n 2] and x[3 n].

(b) Determine whether x[n] is (i) an energy signal, (ii) an average power signal, (iii) a causal
signal, (iv) a periodic signal.

4. Consider the signals x(t), y(t) and z(t) as shown. Determine whether they are odd, even or
neither.

1
5. Consider the continuous time signal

0
if t < 0,
x(t) = t2 if 0 t 2, (1)

0 if t > 2.

(a) Sketch x(t). Is x(t) periodic?

(b) Is x(t) causal?
(c) Compute the energy and power of x(t).
6. Consider the continuous-time signal x(t) = cos(2t).
(a) Sketch the signal.
(b) Is the signal continuous or discrete?
(c) Is the signal even, odd, or neither?
(d) Is the signal causal, anti-causal, or acausal?
(e) Compute the energy of the signal?
(f) Compute the power of the signal
7. Consider the discrete time signal

0
if n < 2,
x[n] = 2n if 2 n 2, (2)

0 if n > 2.

(i) Sketch x[n].

(ii) Is the signal causal, anti-causal, or neither?
(iii) Is the signal even, odd, or neither?
(iv) If x[n] is an energy signal, compute its energy. If x[n] is a power signal, compute its
power.
8. For the signal shown below,

t
Sketch the following signals: (i) x(t + 1), (ii) 2x(t 2), (iii) 5x and (iv) x(t) x(t).
3
9. Assume that the periodic pattern shown in the plot below continues forever.

2
(a) Determine the fundamental period of x[n].
(b) Compute the energy, average power of x[n].
(c) Is x[n] causal? Also, is x[n] even, odd, or neither?

10. For the signal x[n], the periodic pattern shown in the plot below continues for n 0 and the
zeros continue for n < 0.

(a) Express x[n] using step functions and/or impulse functions.

(b) Assume that the signal y[n] = x[n] + x[?] is periodic. Determine the ? so that the
assumption is true.
(c) Determine the fundamental period of y[n].

11. Let x1 (t), x2 (t), and x3 (t) be periodic signals with fundamental periods of 1, 3, and 10,
respectively. Also let x1 (t), x2 (t), and x3 (t) have powers of 1, 2, and 3, respectively.

(i) Compute the fundamental period of z(t) = x1 (t) + x2 (t) + x3 (t).

(ii) Based on our knowledge, can we compute the power of z(t)? If so, what is the power?
If not,why?

12. Determine whether any of the following 5 signal(s) is/are periodic. If yes, determine the
fundamental period.

(a) x(t) = 2 cos(6t + 3) + 10

(b) x[n] = sin(3n) + sin(2n)
(c) x(t) = cos(/10t) + 3 cos(/20t) + 4 sin(/30t)
(d) x[n] = (1)n
jt
(e) x(t) = e 2 + ejt
