The document analyzes stresses on a tapered solid shaft with a semicircular groove subjected to axial pressure using finite element analysis. The maximum von Mises stress of 4,341.7 psi is below the yield strength of 71,000 psi, so the shaft is safe from failure by the maximum distortion energy theory.

PROBLEM 9.24

For the tapered solid shaft shown, a semicircular groove has been machined into the side. The
shaft is made of a hot rolled 1040 steel alloy with yield strength of 71,000 psi. The shaft is
subjected to a uniform axial pressure of 4,000 psi. Determine the maximum principal stresses and
von Mises stresses at the fillet and at the semi-circular groove. Is the shaft safe from failure based
on the maximum distortion energy theory?

ANSWER:

From the book of D.Logan, the maximum distortion energy theory for ductile materials subjected
to static loading predicts that a material will fail if its maximum equivalent (von Mises) stress
reaches its yield strength.

Refer to the results attached. Generated by ANSYS 16.0.

Based on the results, the maximum equivalent (von-Mises) stress in computed is only 4,341.7 psi.
This value is far from the yield strength of our material which is 71,000 psi. From this, we can
conclude that the shaft is safe from failure.
