Background and objective

DVB-T2 field tests in Helsinki area in October 2011

Tx site Espoo, ant h. 310m, ch 24 and 52, ERP 50kW

The objective was to compare DVB-T2 performance between two selected

configuration parameter sets.
1. Ch 52: 32k ext., 256QAM 4/5
2. Ch 24: 8k ext., 64QAM 3/4

Methodology:
Fixed reception at 10m.
Channel power and attenuation margin was measured for both configuration parameter
sets in selected test points.
Attenuation margin was measured at QEF point.

Comparison of test results

Variation in measured sensitivity level indicates different reception conditions, ie. C/N.

Comparison of test results

Attenuation margin is a difference between the measured Rx level and sensitivity. Note the
variation in measured sensitivity level. Also note propagation characteristics when comparing
the measured Rx level between ch 24 and 52. Also antenna behaviour is different and ch 24 is
more tilted.
Difference on average 11,5dB.

Conclusion

Test results can be used to analyze DVB-T2 system performance with

selected configuration parameters. It is also possible to compare the system
performance between two different parameter sets.
When analyzing the results it is important to notice that reception conditions
vary on the field due to the multipath fading. Also the propagation
characteristics are not same for ch 24 and 52. The antenna is tilted more at
ch 24 than at ch 52.
The results show greater difference in performance levels compared to
theoretical C/N values, but more careful analysis is required to find out the
cause for difference. That could be time or location variation, or difference in
propagation characteristics.
