Case Study

The document discusses applying shock pulse method (SPM) diagnostic technology to detect bearing damage in equipment at a nuclear power station in China. It describes three SPM methods - HR/LR, dBm/dBc, and measuring acceleration, velocity, and displacement - that engineers could use to monitor bearings and lubrication conditions. A test was conducted on a heavy water pump under various load and RPM conditions while manipulating the lubrication to compare the response of the different SPM methods. The conclusion is that SPM is an applicable technology for detecting bearing damage and other machinery issues caused by insufficient lubrication at nuclear power stations.

Applicability study of

the diagnostic
technology
by the shock pulse
method

by Haruhisa HAYASHI/ Chubu Electric Power Co., Inc., Nuclear Power Laboratory
by Dr. Kenji UCHIJOU / KOBELCO Research Institute, Inc.
by Minoru Kamei / SPM Instrument Japan KK.
In China, this nuclear
power reactor has a
problem with bearings
in some of the
equipments operating
in the plant.
In the nuclear power
industry a sudden
failure could cause a
serious disaster
The engineers there have
a challenge they have
to chose one of the
following methods to use
to monitor the bearing
and lubrication
condition:
1- HR/LR SPM method.
2- dBm/dBc SPM method.
3- Acc. , Vel. , Disp.
Test Equipment:
-Heavy water Pump.
Test Condotions:
RPM : 3000 rev/m.
Load : 3000 KN.
Test Procdures;
The lubrication is
manipulated to see
different methods
response.
We recognized that
Shock pulse method is
the applicable diagnostic
technology for detecting
bearing damage by lack
of lubrication and other
damages on the
machinery at Nuclear
Power Station.
