Piping Components - Colour Coding Date: 26/06/2014, Rev. 3
1. Purpose
Colour coding is to aid fabricators and warehousemen in the recognition of
material types. Stock Code Numbers and other permanent markings must always
be checked before any component is released for fabrication or installation.
The presence of a colour code does not diminish the need for permanent
markings to be transferred whenever a component is cut during fabrication.
2. Scope:
This document specifies the colour coding requirements for pipe, gaskets and stud
bolts.
All other in-line piping components such as fittings, flanges, line blinds, strainers,
valves, sight flow indicators, etc., shall not be colour coded.
Piping components supplied as fabricated spools shall not be colour coded.
3. Order of Precedence:
In case of conflict between this Specification and any other referenced document,
the order of precedence shall be:
Material Requisition
This Specification
Referenced Codes and Standards
Other referenced documents
4. Normative References:
Not Applicable.
5. Dimensions:
Not Applicable.
6. Terms and Definitions:
The term "BUYER" shall mean Reliance Group of Companies, and shall encompass
such terms as "Purchaser", "Client", "Customer", etc.
The term "SELLER" shall encompass such terms as "Supplier", "Vendor",
"Manufacturer", "Bidder", "Sub-contractor", etc.
The term "QUOTATION" shall encompass such terms as "Bid", "Offer", "Quote",
"Re-bid", "Re-quote", etc.
7. Abbreviations:
Not Applicable.
8. Basic Methodology:
8.1. Substitutions
When a substitution of a material of manufacture (eg, A106 Gr.B pipe in lieu of
API-5L Gr.B) has been approved by BUYER, the colour coding of the substituted
material shall be same as the original material specified in the purchase order.
8.2. Material Types Exclusions
SELLERs shall advise BUYER, IN THEIR QUOTATION, of any material of manufacture
within their scope of supply which is not included in this Specification, requesting
or suggesting a suitable colour code.
8.3. Marking Materials and Techniques
8.3.1. The paint used for colour coding shall be a purpose made paint. For materials
OTHER THAN carbon steel, low temperature carbon steel, high yield strength
carbon steel and other ferritic material, the paint shall be completely free of
metallic pigments or other metallic ingredients. However, where the lighter
colours specified cannot be easily obtained without metallic pigments, colour
coding paint containing TITANIUM DIOXIDE or RUTILE TITANIUM DIOXIDE will be
considered. NO OTHER METALLIC INGREDIENT WILL BE CONSIDERED.
In addition, for austenitic and duplex stainless steels and nickel based alloys, the
paint shall be completely free of any ingredient containing sulphur and halogen
compounds.
SELLERs shall include, IN THEIR QUOTATION, a specific statement to the effect
that this requirement is fully understood and that he can comply. Once an order
has been placed, the SELLER is to submit, as a Vendor Drawing, a data sheet or
descriptive leaflet from the paint manufacturer stating the specific constituents
and chemical composition of the proposed colour coding paint.
An acceptable paint for colour coding is AMERLOCK 400 COLOUR or its
equivalent.
8.3.2. Surfaces to be colour coded shall be clean, dry and free from oil, grease, rust,
scale, and other foreign matter.
8.3.3. If any surface preparation is required, the colour code paint is to be applied within
the same work shift. Prepared surfaces which must be left for a longer period
shall be re-cleaned before painting.
8.3.4. Colour coding paint shall not be applied to any machined surface, nor on any
surface intended for welding.
8.3.5. The paint manufacturer's instructions for use shall be carefully observed. Paint
shall not be applied under the following conditions:
Fig 8.1: Pipe Colour Marking Fig 8.2: Stud-Bolt Colour Marking Fig 8.3: Gasket Colour Marking
9. Accessories:
This section shall list requirements for all accessories/ancillaries accompanying
the main equipment/item including special tools, software, commissioning aids
and assembling/dismantling aids etc.
This heading need not be used where accessories are not a part of the equipment
or item covered by the specification.
40 Titanium (B861 / B862 Gr 2) 1 solid black and 1 Solid light blue stripe
42 Hastelloy C276 (UNS N10276) 1 solid Salmon orange stripe (RAL 2012)
49 Type 321 stainless steel (Nace) 1 Solid Pink + 1 Solid White + 1 Solid Violet
53 Duplex Stainless Steel S31803- (NACE) 1 Solid Dark Blue + 1 Solid Violet

59 Stainless Steel (ASTM A358 UNS S31254) 1 Solid Dark Green + 1 Solid Dark Blue
60 Stainless Steel (ASTM A312 UNS S31254) 1 Solid Yellow + 1 Solid Dark Blue
Note:
On Carbon Steel Piping where pipe is supplied meeting two different requirements, then both
colour coding are required.
Example 1 : for CS Pipe to NACE & IBR - colour code Red & Violet
Example 2 : for CS Pipe with specified tensile under 70,000 psi and IBR - colour code Red
(*) Both Impacted tested carbon steel pipes and pipe components, which has been impact tested
at -45 deg C only, shall be painted on with Bright Solid Orange Colour as indicated in DEP No.
10080-1-SS-PP-004(Part-I through VI).
(**) Both Impacted tested carbon steel pipes and pipe components, which has been impact tested
at -45 deg C as well as -48 deg C , shall be painted on with 1 Bright Solid Orange band + 1 Solid
Red band Colour as indicated in DEP No. 10080-1-SS-PP-004 (Part-I through VI)
