Visj220: Professor Raimondo Assignment #1 - LIGHT

Each image is worth 25 points for a total of 75 points.

You must use three different scenes or settings for your three pictures.

Each images must have a different subject (person).

Photo #1- right-angle light- is the ONLY image where you can photograph
someone you know.

Image #2 -posed environmental portrait or non-posed contextual environmental


portrait, must be of someone you do not know.

Image #3- Found Light any source of natural or available light to produce
interesting image. Can contain people but does not have to.

IMAGE GUIDELINES:

1) Head and/or head and shoulders Natural Light Portrait. Light should be striking your
subject at right angle from any natural light source. You may use someone you know for #1
only. This picture must be done with available natural light. Identify location that will
produce good light. Determine what time of day creates the best light for the assignment.
Bring your subject to location and, using what youve learned about camera settings and
composition make a well-exposed, composed, portrait.

2) Environmental Portrait: Un-posed full body photograph of someone with


environmental context. The lighting must be Available Light- either Natural or Artificial
(no flash). If there is more than one person in the frame (maximum three people), you must
make the picture in a way that establishes your subject as the dominant/focus person in the
frame. This image cannot be anyone you know. Introduce yourself to your subject and
explain your purpose. They must be comfortable for this to work. You will need to work this
scene - be patient, wait for the right moment, in order to make a good photograph.

Look for interesting light, make sure your composition is clean.

3) Available light/ Creative Approach. Utilize artificial, available, or natural light. This is
the only frame, of three images, that does NOT need to use people. As you move about
through your day, and night, train your eye to be aware of the light around you. In all forms.
Look for patterns, reflections, subtle and strong- or subtle- interesting light.

You will be graded on the following criteria:

I. Content/Ideas: Choice of setting and subject for each images. Range of


difference in your three images. Creativity.
II. Composition and Framing: careful attention and use of line and space.
Distinctions between objects in foreground, middle ground and background are
clear. Good balance and well-designed.

III. Framing: Placement of subject within the frame (does it compete with other
content in a distracting way? Strike the right visual balance?)

IV. Aesthetics: Visual arrangement, quality of light, use of color. Image engages the
viewer with drama, interest, humor or pictorial beauty. Highlight and shadows.

V. Technical Competency: The mechanical making of your picture.

Proper Exposure
Shutter/Aperture usage (creative use for point of view)
Focus
Digital image quality
Raw take evaluation (working technical problems through to solution.

WRITTEN MATERIALS- Self-evaulation and Captions: 15 points Articulation of your


process and Self-evaluation. This must be completed and printed out before coming
to class. Make sure you keep a digital copy on your USB to turn in on assignment Due
Date.

Self-Critique: Complete and thoughtful:

a) Challenges encountered during shooting of assignment. Tack used to solve the


problems.

b) What you learned, would have done differently, if starting over on same
assignment.

Captions complete and accurate: Who, What, Where and Why. Captions on selects in P/S.

MATERIALS SUBMITTED IN PROPER FORMAT: 10 Points

Four individual folders labeled as follows: All, Selects, Three and Documents.

All Photographers re-named with your name, assignment, and number:

Selects renamed as Jackson_LIGHT_001 through Jackson_LIGHT_003

Self-Evaluation printed out hard copy in envelope.

Read the assignment instructions carefully before you begin making pictures.
Ultimately, you will be culling three individual selects from your full take of
pictures. Work on each of the three picture assignments separately, work the three
in order. Your full set of images, if you work smart and careful, will likely be close to
200 frames to achieve success on this first assignment. Do not wait until the last
minute to do the work. That timetable will make it impossible for you to complete the
work. You need to pull three different selects, three different subjects, from three
different locations. This will require time and discipline.
