Town Square of Kalmar Caruso St. John Threshold: Produced by An Autodesk Educational Product

The document summarizes a renovation project of the Town Square of Kalmar in Sweden from 1999-2003. The architects Caruso St. John renovated the square by removing roads and pavement to reestablish the original field stone surface, while also defining thresholds within the square using different paving materials. Pedestrian paths and spaces for events were delineated with smoother concrete slabs and cut granite surfaces. The renovation aimed to provide an imaginative model for renovating a historically significant public space.

national historic significance.

Caruso St. John

During its 300 year history,

Stortorget has been a location for political,
military and religious representation,
for commercial transactions, but most
frequently for individual passage, reverie
and coincidental meetings.

The project involved the removal

of roads and pavements, and the re-
establishment of a unitary surface of field
stones, the primitive granite stones that
were first used in the square. Due to the
use of different materials the architect
defines thresholds within the square. The
use of a type of pavement also relates
to the representative buildings on the
square. Pedestrian routes and sites for
public events were accommodated within
smoother surfaces of precast concrete
slabs and cut granite sets.
