The document summarizes the production of ethylene oxide using a direct oxidation method. It involves simulating individual process units like the reactor, absorber column, desorber column, and fractionating tower. The simulations will then be combined into a complete flow diagram. The reactor design is specified using a RPLUG reactor with temperatures from 200-300°C and pressure of 20 bar. The reaction kinetics and specifications are defined. Preliminary simulations resulted in errors regarding reaction rates and mass balances.

Reactor Design

The reference given specifies the components required for the simulation comprising of the
following: Ethylene, Oxygen, Ethylene Oxide, Nitrogen, Argon, Acetaldehyde, Formaldehyde,
Methane, Ethane, Water, Carbon Dioxide.
The thermodynamic model being used is Peng Robinson as the RK-Soave Method shows
instability around the critical pressure point.
The R-Plug reactor was chosen with a constant specified temperature profile varying from 200C
to 300C.
The pressure inside the reactor is known to vary from 10-30 bar and therefore was taken to be
20 bar.
Reactor specifications were taken as follows: Number of tubes 5000, Length of tube 9m
(varying from 6m to 12m), Diameter of tube 35mm (varying from 20mm to 50mm).
Reaction type was taken to be as LHSW, with the reaction as:
1
2 4 + 2 2 2
2

2 2 + 32 22 + 22

The expression for the kinetic factor is given as:

1 1
= () ( )( )
Result Summary:
Error:
RPLUG Exited because integration failed. Index = (-3)
Probable cause is incorrect kinetics. Check rate-Con
Parameters and molar volume calculations.

Warning:
At Z=0.0000
Reaction rate is greater than zero reaction (1) But reactant Ethyl-01 is not present.
Possible cause: Zeroth order reactant not present. Rate is set to zero.

Error:
Block Reactor is not in mass balance:
Mass inlet flow= 0.78390103e+01, Mass outlet flow: 0.26955181e+07
