Cummins ISM Engine Test: Fuels and Lubricants Research Division

The document summarizes a test of an engine lubricant using a Cummins ISM engine under conditions simulating heavy-duty diesel operation. The test was run for 200 hours using a 500 ppm sulfur fuel to evaluate the lubricant's ability to control engine wear, deposits, and soot generation. Key parts and lubricant properties were analyzed after testing to evaluate performance based on pass/fail criteria for parameters like engine wear, oil filter plugging, and sludge formation.

Objective
Evaluate the performance of an engine lubricant to control engine
wear and deposits under heavy-duty operating conditions
selected to accelerate soot generation, valve train wear, and
deposit formation in a turbocharged, aftercooled diesel engine
equipped with exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) hardware.

Field Service Simulated

High-load, heavy-duty diesel engine operation under high soot
conditions in an EGR environment.

Test Fixture
Cummins ISM engine with variable geometry turbocharger,
production EGR cooler, and electronically controlled EGR valve.
