The poem is narrated by a persona talking to a child. In the first stanza, the persona is surprised that the child is being loving, kissing them, and offering to help with little jobs. In the second stanza, the persona is shocked that the child's face and clothes are clean, and that the child saved their lunch money. The child is behaving like a "lamb" compared to usually being a "rebel." In the third stanza, the persona doesn't believe the child is themselves, as there is no "rage or hullabaloo." The final stanza reveals the reason for the change is that the child has brought home their school report.
