Navigator Collaborators

The 8th grade Navigator Collaborators want to partner with K-2 elementary students to encourage literacy. They will read selected texts to the elementary students and do brief discussions and activities to promote comprehension and foster enjoyment of reading. Both groups will benefit from practicing close reading skills, social interaction, and developing 21st century skills like collaboration and creative expression.

Navigator Collaborators
Who We Are: A Literacy Initiative: Sharing the Gift of Literacy
We are 8th grade Scholars that would like to collaborate with elementary grades (K-2) to
encourage:
The joy of reading
The use of literacy strategies (close reading and discussion)
21st century skills

What We Offer:
A literacy experience that will use comprehension and collaboration to foster the enjoyment and
importance of reading in each group (elementary and middle school). We expose our secondary
scholars to experiences that will reshape their perceptions of reading and reawaken their
appetites for books.

Our Plan of Action:

Our Navigator Collaborators (NC) will share text (selected by each NC) and preplan a short
activity relevant to the text. The NC will read the book to the participating collaborators (PC)
and have a brief discussion to gauge for understanding. The books shared will be specific to
fostering good character. As literacy is CMS North star, the NCs will introduce and engage the
PCs in close reading activities that are grade specific.

The benefits:
Elementary: learn to close read texts, enjoyment of reading, positive social interaction, and use
of 21st century skills (collaborative environments, opportunities for creative expression, inquiry
based approach to reading, writing for reflection, and hands-on learning experiences)

Secondary: Application of close reading skills, positive social interaction, service learning,
reawakening of the joy of reading, use of 21st century skills (collaborative environments,
opportunities for creative expression, inquiry based approach to reading, writing for reflection,
and hands-on learning experiences)
