Lab Sheet For IESL Students Lab 3
Objectives : familiarise the environmental factors affecting the wind turbine performance at a
site .
Introduction
At a height of above the 1 kilometre the wind is barely affected by the surface of the earth. In
lower atmospheric layers the wind speed is affected by the friction against the earth's surface.
The more significant the roughness of the ground surface, the more the wind will be slowing
down. Tall trees in woods and forests and large buildings in the cities slow the wind
considerably. Concrete runways in airports and road surfaces will marginally slow the wind .
Water surfaces are smoother than concrete runways, and will have lesser effect on the wind.
Notations
V ref= Wind speed at refence height
zref = reference height
z= height
Zo=serface roughness factor
Vz= wind speed at required height

Methodology:
Discussion
1. Discuss the changes in the site specific wind turbine curves for each turbine and critically
analyse the geographical factors which you observe during the site visit that affect the
deviation of the selected wind turbines.
2. The management of Pawandhnavi decided to change the gamesa G 58 turbines with GE
1.5 xle turbine. Instead of 12 , 7 , 1.5MW GE turbine will be fixed. You are required to
identify the best places to fix ( critically justifying your selection) those turbine from
existing loactions and annual average energy production of each month by the plant with
GE turbines. ( students are required to assume the surface roughness of the area, to
calculate the wind velocity use the locations wind data of each month at height of 65 m)
