SOLVED PROBLEMS:
1. For an 8-PSK system operating with an information bit rate of 24kbps, determine the
baud.
Solution:
Baud=24,000/3=8,000
2. Determine the peak frequency deviation for a binary FSK signal with a mark frequency
of 49 kHz, a space frequency of 51 kHz, and an input bit rate of 2kbps.
Solution:
f = (49 kHz 51 kHz) / 2
= 1 kHz

3. For 16-PSK and a transmission system with a 10 kHz bandwidth determine the maximum
bit rate
Solution:
bit rate = 4 x 10,000
= 40,000 bps
4. Determine the baud and minimum bandwidth necessary to pass a 10 kbpsbinary signal
using Amplitude shift keying.
Solution:
B = 10,000 / 1
Baud = 10,000
5. For a QPSK system and the given parameters, determine the Energy per bit in dBI.
C = 10^-12 W
N = 1.2 x 10^-14W
B = 120 kHz
fb = 60 kbps
Solution:
Eb = 10log x 10^-12 / 60 kbps
= -167.8 dBj
6. For a QPSK system and the given parameters, determine the carrier power in dBm.
C = 10^-12 W
N = 1.2 x 10^-14W
B = 120 kHz
fb = 60 kbps
Solution:
C = 10log 10^- / 0.001
= -90 dBm
7. A broadcast television channel has a bandwidth of 6 MHz. Calculate the maximum data
rate that could be carried in a TV channel using a 16level code. Ignore noise.
Solution:
C = 2 B log 2 M = 2 (6 x10 6 ) log 2 16
= 48 Mbps

8. Determine the baud and minimum bandwidth necessary to pass a 10Kbps binary signal
using amplitude shift keying.

Solution: For ASK, N=1

B=10,000/1
B=10,000
Baud=10,000/1
Baud= 10,000

9. Determine the minimum bandwidth for a binary FSK signal with a mark frequency of 49
kHz, a space frequency of 51 kHz, and an input bit rate of 2 kbps.
Solution:
B = 2( 1000+2000)
= 6kHz
10. Find the minimum allowable bandwidth for a binary signal with a bit rate of 200 kbps.
Solution:
For a binary communications channel: R = 2B;
B = (R/2)
= (200K/2)
B= 100 KHz

11. For a single channel PCM system with a sample rate fs=6000 samples per second and a
seven bit compressed PCM code, determine the line speed.
Solution:
Line speed=6,000*7
Line speed= 42,000bps

12. For a 16PSK and a transmission system with a 10 KHz bandwidth, determine the
maximum bit rate.

Solution:
Bit rate=4*10,000
Bit rate=40Kbps

13. For a standard telephone circuit with a signal to noise power of 1000(30dB) and a
bandwidth of 2.7 KHz, determine the Shannon limit for information capacity.
Solution:
I=3.32Blog(1 + S/N)
I=(3.32)(2700)(log(1+1000))
I=26.9Kbps
14. Determine (a) the peak frequency deviation, (b) minimum bandwidth, and (c) baud for a
binary FSK signal with a mark frequency of 49 kHz, a space frequency of 51 kHz, and an
input bit rate of 2 kbps.
f = |149kHz - 51 kHz| / 2 =1 kHz
B = 2(1000 + 2000) = 6 kHz
baud = 2000 / 1 = 2000

15. For an 8-PSK system operating with an information bit rate of 24kbps, determine the
baud.
Solution:
Baud=24,000/3=8,000
