Mission Report Format

Introduction
Name of mission, year built, who built it, location, who or what is your mission named after, is there is specific
reason it was built there, transition sentence into next paragraph
Mission Description
Pretend you are looking at your mission. Use words to paint a picture of your mission. You want your reader to be
able to visualize your mission. Make sure to include any special features associated with your mission (example:
bell towers, gardens, cemetery, historical detail, other special design features)
Daily Life
What was your mission known for? Farming? Carpentry? What routines did the Indians and Spanish follow on a
daily basis? What did the men, women, and children do? Who went to church services? Was there a choir?
Interesting Details
What are some interesting stories behind the mission you are studying. Was there a fire? Was it the first mission
built? Was there a major revolt that took place there? What is the mission used for now? These are just some ideas.
Find interesting details or facts to put in your own words.
Conclusion
Restate the main ideas of your report in a few sentences. Summarize each paragraph with a sentence. Remember
that a conclusion paragraph has no new information. Can people visit it today? Is it still used as a place of
worship? Have about 3-5 sentences
Bibliography
You must use at least 2 books and 3 websites for your project. Be sure to follow the correct format for recording
your sources
Oral Presentation
Be prepared to share information about your mission in a short two-minute oral presentation to the class. We will
discuss the presentation in class. This speech will take place on Friday, January 20th (subject to change).
Artistic Representation
Please pick ONE of these choices if you have another idea, please see Mrs. Zack.
1. Scale Model of a Mission
This has been the required project in the past, but it is only one of the options. If you choose this, be sure to include
the mission church and other surrounding mission buildings. You may use any materials you would like, but it
should be created on your own, not from a kit.
2. Mission Map
Design and make a detailed map of your mission, including all important buildings and parts of the mission.
Include captions explaining the various parts of the mission and what each had to do with daily mission life. Be
sure to identify the NAME of your mission on the map.
3. Board Game
Your game may follow any design or format you wish but include 20 facts about mission life. Create a game board,
cards etc and make sure you have included directions for how to play.
4. Picture Book
Create a childrens picture book that explains the parts of your mission and elements of daily life at your mission.
Pictures must be drawn by you.
5. A Day if the Life of a Mission Write it or Perform it!
Pretend you are a person working or living at your mission and write a diary entry, letter, or newspaper article of
what life is like at your mission. Be detailed and include facts that you learned while writing your report. What was
life like for the missionaries and Native Americans who lived and worked there?
6. Watercolor/Painting/Pastel
Draw and paint a picture of your mission. Include important buildings and try to incorporate important information
or interesting details to your artistic representation.
Write an explanation about your painting that would interest someone that might want to buy your work of art.

4th Grade Mission Project
As we continue our study of California, we are going to pause to take a longer look at an important time period in
our history, that of the missions.

Students will be assigned a mission and class time will be given to note take and plan out their essays. It will be
important to research a little at home and maybe also work on some of it at home, especially the Artistic
Representation portion. Students will need to let me know which project choice they have chosen, so please discuss
this with your child and make sure it is something you are okay with as well.

We will be visiting Mission San Luis Rey next Monday. Projects are tentatively due on Friday, January 20th. We
will gauge as a class how note taking and paragraph writing is going and you will be notified if this date changes.

Students are being asked to write a 5 paragraph essay on their mission. This will need to either be submitted typed
or written in cursive. They will then be asked to give a two-minute oral presentation on their mission while
displaying their artistic representation. Details are attached.
