Drawing Graphs

A graph is a two-dimensional display that shows the relationship between two variables, the dependent variable (y) and independent variable (x). A graph has two perpendicular axes, the x-axis which is horizontal and the y-axis which is vertical, that intersect at the origin point (0,0). Graph paper is used to plot points (x,y) defined by a given function and draw the graph.

GRAPHS

A graph is a two - dimensional pictorial display of the relationship between two variables. A graph is a plot of the sets of
ordered pairs i.e. (x , y) which are defined by a given function; and it shows how the dependent variable (y) changes as
the independent variable (x) changes.

Axes of a Graph
A graph has two axes: x and y. The x- axis is the horizontal axis, and the y-axis the vertical axis. The axes are
perpendicular number lines which meet or intersect at a point called the origin. The origin is given a zero value for
both x and y, (0, 0). A graph plot is made on graph paper which has equal divisions of 1 square unit on both axes. A
typical graph paper with its axes numbered is shown below:
1. Only use a pencil to draw a graph. Never use pen.
2. Ensure that the pencil is well sharpened and not too bright.
3. Do not draw double lines to connect points.
4. Ensure that the graph paper is clean.
5. If the plot is linear, draw the best fit straight line.
6. Use a ruler or straight edge to draw all straight lines
7. If the plot is quadratic, connect the points to make a smooth curve.
8. Curves must be drawn free-handed without the use of a straight edge or ruler.
The solution is where the two lines meet: x= 0.4 and y = 2.2
