Syllabus: Engineering Mechanics

This document provides an overview of engineering mechanics. It discusses the following key points: 1) Engineering mechanics deals with the conditions of rest and motion of bodies under the action of force. It includes mechanics of rigid bodies, deformable bodies, and fluids. 2) Rigid body mechanics includes static mechanics which deals with bodies at rest and dynamics which deals with bodies in motion. 3) Vector and scalar quantities are introduced, with examples provided of each. The common systems of units for mechanics are also defined.

Engineering Mechanics

Introduction
Engineering Mechanics: It is physical science that deals with the conditions of rest
and motion of bodies under the action of force.
Type of mechanics
1- Mechanics of rigid bodies: It deals with bodies that do not deform under the
action of force.
Divisions of rigid bodies mechanics
- Static: deals with bodies at rest.
- Dynamics: deals with bodies at motion.
2- Mechanics of deformable bodies: It deals with bodies which deform under the
action of force.
3- Mechanics of fluids: It deals with bodies that have no certain shape such as:
liquid and gas.
Vector & Scalar quantities
- Vector quantities : are the quantities which have magnitude and direction such
as: Force , weight , distance , speed , displacement , acceleration ,velocity .
- Scalar quantities : are the quantities which have only magnitude , such as
:Time , size , sound , density , light , volume .
System of units :
- International system (SI units)
length in meter (m) , mass in Kilogram (Kg), force in Newton (N)
- English system
length in foot (ft) , mass in Slug, force in Pound (Ib)
Unit conversion:
l lb = 4.4482 N
1 slug = 14.5938 kg
1 ft = 0.3048 m
