Substations play an important role in power system networks by maintaining continuity of power supply
between th e utility and th e customers: ind ustrial, commercial and resid ential. A mod ern h igh v oltage
substation includ e eq uipment such as circuit breakers, transformers, capacitors, reactors, and eq uipment
for protection, control, automation and communications. A correctly planned and d esigned substation is
essential to th e reliable supply of electrical energy. Substation sites and build ings must also conform with
many req uirements relating to env ironmental, community impacts and build ing cod es - th ese
req uirements constrain and interact with th e electrical and eq uipment d esign issues.
