SQX Plate Stress - RAM - STAAD Forum - RAM - STAAD - Bentley Communities

Arun asks (1) if SQX and SQY stresses from STAAD are one-way or two-way stresses and (2) if they can be used to check for punching shear. Nihesh responds that SQX and SQY are out-of-plane shear stresses that can be used to check one-way shear stresses. Nihesh provides a figure and recommends Example 18 in the STAAD help for more details on stress calculations. Arun confirms that SQX and SQY can be used to check one-way shear stresses.

SQX plate stress

Hi !!!
I'm new to STAAD and I'm analysing a Mat using plates. I've some queries...

1) Whether plate stresses SQX,SQY are One Way stresses or Two Stresses?

2) Whether SQX,SQY can be used for checking punching shear in a mat??? If not what is the best to check
for punching shear using STAAD?

Regards,

Arun.

The punching stresses are the out-of-plane shear stresses SQX and SQY. Attached is a figure illustrating that

Thanks Nihesh,

Where are the stresses SX,SY used??

Does it help in any calculations???

In reply to Arun Subramanian:

I would suggest that you take a look at example 18 provided as part of online help and which can be accessed by
clicking on Help | Contents | Application Examples. This example describes how the stresses are calculated. See the
attached screen shot.

In reply to Arun Subramanian:

SX and SY aremembrane stresses in the plane of the element. SQX and SQY are out-of-plane shear
stresses.

In reply to NIHESH.N:

Thanks Nihesh,

I read the calculation in example 18. It was used for calculating principal stresses & it was useful.

Some people in my place are using SQX,SQY for checking against one way shear for a mat...

Is it right??? If not wat STAAD value can be used to check against one way shear???

In reply to Arun Subramanian:

Anyone kindly reply to this masg...

In reply to Arun Subramanian:

Yes, you may use SQX and SQY to check one-way shear. Sounds reasonable
