ASCE Requirements for


Citations
Fall 2015

All factual material that is not original


with you must be accompanied by a
reference to its source.

ASCE books and journals prefer the


author-date system of referencing.

This system has two parts, the text


citation and the reference list.

The text citation appears where the


material to be cited is presented in the
body of the report.

The citation refers readers to a source in


the reference list.

The reference list is sorted alphabetically


by the authors name and then year of
publication.

Every reference must have a text


citation and

Every text citation must have a


corresponding reference.

ASCE prefers text citation to be use the


author-date method.

List the last names of the authors, then


the year of publication.

The author-date formats are: Latin et alii


(and others)

One author (Smith 2004);


wo authors (Smith and Jones 2004); and
three or more authors (Smith et al. 2004).

In most text citations, the author and


date appear in parentheses with no comma
between them.

For example:

with lowercase letters: 2004a, 2004b.

The reference list listing all the text


citations appears at the end of the paper.

Prepare a reference section listing all


references alphabetically by last name of
the first author.

For anonymous reports and standards,


alphabetize by the issuing institution.

followed by the initialism or acronym in
parentheses, if applicable.

only the initialism or acronym.

For reports authored by persons, include


the full institution nameno acronym
and its location.
