B: Perimeter and Area
#1 A school hall is to have its interior
walls and ceiling painted.

The hall is a cuboid with length 30 m,

width 20 m and height 4 m.

Windows and doors, of total surface

area 200 m2, are not to be painted. NOT TO SCALE

(a) Calculate the total surface area to be painted.

(30 X 4 X 2) + (4x2x20) + (30 x 20) 200 = 1000 200

Answer (a) 800 m2 [2]

(b) One litre of paint covers 18 m2. It is sold in 5 litre tins.

How many tins of paint are needed to complete the task?
800
18 = 44.4444 litres

44.4444/ 5 = 8.888888

Answer (b) 9 tins [2]

The diagram shows a car park.
Mrs Roberts is selling the car park. She will accept any offer that is more than 28 per
square metre.

Mr Patel offers 194 700 for the car park..

Will Mrs Roberts accept Mr Patels offer for the car park?

You must show how you reached your decision.

Area rectangle = 42 x 20 = 840

Area Trapezium = (20 + 140) x 78 / 2 = 6240

Total Area = 7080 square metres

7080 x 28 = 198, 240 pounds needed minimum

194 700 is 3540 pounds less than this so she should not accept the offer.

Decision No.

Answer (a)(i) 2.01 m [2]

(ii) Calculate the number of complete turns the wheel makes when the
bicycle travels 700 m.

D: Volume
#1
The diagram shows a trench which has
been dug out of level ground so that a
cylindrical water pipe can be laid.

NOT TO SCALE

The cross-section, ABCD, of the

trench is a trapezium with horizontal
sides of length 1.1 m and 0.8 m and
height 0.7 m. The length of the
trench is 500 m.

(a) Calculate the volume of earth removed. [3]

Area = 0.5 x 0.7 (0.8 + 1.1) x 500
0.665 x 500 = 332.5 m3

(b) If 1 m3 of earth has a mass of 1.8 tonnes, calculate the mass of earth
removed. [2]
332.5 x 1.8 = 598.5 tonnes or 599 tonnes (3 sf)

(c) The diameter of the pipe is 0.5 m. After the pipe has been laid earth is
replaced until the ground is again level.
Calculate the percentage of the earth which is not replaced.
Volume taken up by pipe = r2 h
x 0.252x 500 = 98.2 m3 This is earth not replaced.
As a % of total = 98.2 / 332.5 = 0.295 ie 29.5%[4]
(d) If water flows through the pipe at 0.8 m/s, how many litres will
flow through the pipe in 1 hour? [1 m3 = 1000 litres.]
Flow is 0.8m/s litres in 1 hour
1 cubic metre = 1000 litres
Length of water flowing in 1 hour is 0.8 x 60 x 60 = 2880 m
Cross sectional area of pipe is x 0.25 x 0.25 = 0.196 m2
Volume of water in 1 hour is 2880 x 0.196 = 565.2 m3
In litres: 565.2 x 1000 = 565, 000 litres.

#2 What volume of stone would be needed to construct a solid, square-based pyramid
with length of base 45 m and perpendicular height of 20m?
45 x 45 x 20 x 1/3 =
13500 cubic metres. [2]

The length of a sloping edge was found to be 25m.

What area of stone would be covered if the outer surfaces of the pyramid were painted?
252 22.5 2 = 118.75
Height of triangle side is 10.9 m
Area of one triangle is 10.9 x 45 / 2 = 245.25 m2
Area of outer faces of pyramid = 4 x 245.25 = 981 m2
981 m2
