Lesson Plan in Science 4

First Quarter

Date: June 13, 2016


Grade/ Section:

I. Objectives:
1. Describe materials based on the ability to absorb water.
2. Classify materials based on the ability to absorb water.

II. A. Materials:
3 pcs of rubber 3 pcs of face Tray
bands towel Water
3 pcs of cotton Tissue paper Clock or timer
balls 3 pcs of t-shirt Dropper or
3 pcs of sponges 3 pcs of rug dipper

D. Values Integration: Awareness on the kinds of materials to wear on different seasons.



III. Learning Tasks:
A. Engagement:
Motivation/ Review:
1. Have the pupils go around the classroom.
2. Have them list down at least ten materials they see in the classroom.
3. Instruct the pupils to go back to their seats after listing the materials.
4. Ask: What materials did you see as you went around the classroom?
5. What materials in your list are solids? liquids? gas?
6. Have the pupils fill up the chart.

7. Recall the previous
lesson by asking: How did we group the materials?
8. Introduce the lesson by saying: Look at the materials you have listed. What if I place one
object in a basin with water? Observe what happens. Introduce the word absorb.
9. Say: Aside from grouping the materials into solid, liquid or gas, they can also be grouped
base on their ability to absorb water.
10. Teach pupils the skill of description: color, shape, size, texture, weight, etc.

B. Exploration:
Advance Preparation (to be done a day before Science Class)
1. Gather the materials needed for the activity.
2. Divide the materials equally to every group of pupils.
3. Divide the class into groups.
4. Instruct each group to get the materials needed from the teacher.
5. Provide each group with the LM.
6. Instruct each group to perform Lesson 1: LM Activity 1- Which Materials Absorb Water and
Which Do Not? pp. 2-4
7. Go around and follow-up the conduct of activity by each group.
8. Remind each group that they will be presenting their gathered data in class after finishing
their activity.

C. Explanation:
Ask each group to present their data and answer the guide questions.
1. What are the characteristics of each of the materials before placing them in water? Describe each
material before placing them in water. (round, thick, soft, etc)
2. When you added water to the materials what happened to the water? to the materials? (a. It
disappeared and the material got wet. B. The water dripped and we can take out material and still
see the water)
3. When you lifted the material and squeezed it, did water come out? Did the material get wet?
4. Is the material heavier when wet?
Say: There are different materials in our environment that can be classified according
to their properties. They can be classified based on their ability to absorb water. Some
materials can absorb water more than others.

D. Elaboration/Extension
Some of the materials absorb water more than others. Cotton is very porous, which makes it a natural
absorber of water.
Porous materials are materials having small holes that allow air or liquid to pass through.

Ask:
Why would some people prefer to use plastic bag than a paper bag?
During rainy days, what kind of material are you going to use to prevent you from
getting wet? Explain why?

E. Evaluation:
Classify the materials according to their ability to absorb water. Put a check (/) if the material
can absorb water and (x) if not.

IV. Assignment:
Go around your classroom or home. Collect at least ten materials and test them as to whether
or not the materials absorb water.
