Guidelines For Joint Detailing Using Steel Hollow Sections Rhs/Shs in Foot-Over-Bridges

The document provides guidelines for splice joints when using steel hollow sections for foot-over-bridges. It describes three types of splice joints: 1) Shop splice joints where sections over 6.25m are spliced in the shop using plug welds. 2) Strengthened shop splice joints which add cover plates for extra strength. 3) Field bolted splice joints where sections under 11.5-12m are spliced in the field using pre-welded plates and bolts.

GUIDELINES FOR JOINT DETAILING USING STEEL

HOLLOW SECTIONS RHS/SHS IN FOOT-OVER-

BRIDGES

5.0 Splice Joints

The details of splice joints with relevant sketches have been

illustrated.
5.1 Shop Splice

i) The maximum rolled length of the closed structurals (RHS/SHS)

presently available, is 6.25 m.

ii) In the case of fabricated length required is more than 6.25m the
splice joint shall be provided in the shop as per typical details of
splice shown above.

iii) In the case of shop splice, it is required that the two non-holed
angle cuts are placed inside the main section to be spliced which
has two holes to be plug-welded and ground-flush on each face.

5.2 Strengthened Splice joint

Shop Splice Joint, applicable for Top and Bottom Chords, has been
strengthened by providing additional cover plates with more safety
cushion so as to augment the strength of splice joint wherever
required with suitable modifications to the Splice Joint described at
5.1.
5.3 Field Bolted Splice

For easy transportation, the length of chord members has been

limited from 11.5 m to 12.0 m which is to be subsequently spliced in
the field.

The elevation girders fabricated in workshop are in two parts and the
same are required to be transported to the site for final assembly /
erection. These parts are to be connected by bolted splice in the
field as per the details shown below.

BOLTED SPLICE IN FIELD FOR TOP AND BOTTOM CHORDS

i) In the case of bolted splice which is done in the field, one pre-holed plate
which is welded to each face in the workshop is used for
splicing/connecting the section and bolting is done keeping them in hole-
matching position.
ii) In making site joints, bolts should be dipped in thick red lead paint before
insertion in the holes.
