Reading and Writing Lesson Plan (100 Points)
Reading and Writing Lesson Plan (100 Points)
Performance Project # 4
Imagine that you are beginning to write a lesson for a book of your choice. Your district told you
that you need to include a pre, during, and post reading activity. They also said that you need to
integrate higher order thinking skills and that writing needs to be a main focus.
1. Choose a book
The Diary of a Young Girl
2. Develop pre reading and writing activities
Pre reading activities:
Pre reading activities are really important when there is something to read. It is being used to
help students comprehend and understand what is in the text, books. There are some pre reading
activities that I am using with my students before reading to increase the learning and I am plan-
ing to use them with The Diary of a Young Girl as well. First of all, I will be handing out a pre-
view of the book to my students and read it with my students. By doing this, I will assure that I
am getting my students attention and preparing them for the book that they are about to read.
Develop during reading and writing activities. When we read the preview of the story I will be
asking from my students to put themselves into the situation that takes place in the book. This
way will help them to get an idea about the story and be ready to read. It is obvious that there
should be always some practices before we do something. For instance, as a soccer coach I re-
quire my team to do practice at least 2 times before each soccer game. Practicing and gaining
some knowledge about anything before you start doing it always helpful and saves time. Why
not to do preview of the story before we start reading. Secondly I will do preaching concept of
the book. In this book there are some terms related about war, racism etc So, students will be
able to learn the concept and meaning of some vocabularies that take place in the book. Pre
teaching the concept will absolutely help my students to be ready for next step. Next pre reading
activity will be predicting about the The Diary of a Young Girl. They will need to think about the
book and share what do they expect to see. This is the way I can help them to draw an image
about the book in their head. Lastly I will be asking from my students to build some background
knowledge.
Pre writing activities:
Writing is something that takes a lot of effort from people. It requires you to have some knowl-
edge, do critical thinking and well organized. So, in order for me to help my students to gain
writing skills I do some pre writing activities before we start writing. The first and most impor-
tant pre writing activity that I will do with my students is brainstorming. Brainstorming is also
called listing. So, students will be writing down what they are thinking about and what they are
planing to do. Brainstorming provides an opportunity to students to think critically and logically
since they have time to think what they need to write before they start writing . After brainstorm-
ing I will ask my students to cluster / group their ideas. This is the way that students can explore
the relationship between ideas. For each cluster, I will require them to have title. By doing clus-
tering my students will be able to see their ideas visually in a different way. In addition to all
these, I will also ask them to free writing that will give them chances to improve their writing
skills. Free writing will allow my students to focus on a specific topic that they want, but will
force them to write quickly that they are nit able to edit anything.
Post reading activities are very important for teachers to do, because as a teacher you want to
know what your students learned from the text. I try to use as many ways as possible to increase
the learning . For this book, I am planing to use the following ones;
* Summary writing: This is the one of the most valuable way that I use to understand the com-
prehension and learning. I first ask from my students to work with a partner to identify the
main points of the reading. After they are done with working with partners then I ask them to
work individually, so they could write their reflections.
* Grouping students: I will have some groups in class. First, each group will be discussing about
the book with their group members. While they talk about the book, they will need to create
questions to ask other groups when we do groups questionings. Once every group has their
questions then groups will be asking questions to to each other. This is a great way to cooperate
students and create critical thinking environment.
* Being a teacher: My students will need to act as a teacher to ask questions and create discus-
sion session about the book. In order for my students to be a teacher to ask questions about the
book, they first need to know everything about the book, so this way will increase the under-
standing and learning of students.
* Vocabulary: Students will need to write down 10 new vocabularies that they have learned with
this book. They will also need to use them in sentences, so they can master them very well. In
addition to this I will also use kahoot.com to play vocabulary game in class.
* Students will need to create their own test about the book to test themselves
Post reading activities are also playing very important role in education. Teachers do them to
make sure that writing skills has been successfully acquired. As a teacher I plan to do following
activities in my class to help my student in writing.
* First of all, I will ask my students to read what they have writing. They will have to make sure
that their writings make sense, they did not do any grammar mistake, punctuation is okay etc
* They will need to do peer checking for their writings. This will allow them to see something
different than their own ones and help them understand that how writing has to be.
* Letters
* Essays
* Poems
