Thrust Reversers: Aircraft Systems Topic 7

Thrust reversers assist aircraft in stopping after landing by redirecting engine exhaust forward, providing braking force. There are several types of thrust reversers, including bucket and clamshell designs, that are actuated pneumatically or hydraulically. Reverse thrust is selected after the aircraft is on the ground and the thrust levers are in idle, allowing up to 50-60% of forward thrust braking power. It is most effective at high speeds and has limitations for use below 60-70 knots to avoid foreign object damage.
