The document discusses calculating the fixture unit (FU) value for a restaurant based on the number and type of plumbing fixtures provided. It notes there are different types of fixtures with varying FU values and it's unclear if the question asks for water supply fixture units (WSFU) or drainage fixture units (DFU). It determines the question likely asks for DFU since floor drains are included. Of the answer choices given, only B is a whole number as required for DFU values. The document then shows how one could calculate a non-whole number value if assuming WSFU by taking 75% of fixture values that provide only cold water. Doing this calculation results in a total WSFU of 94.5,

What is the FU of a restaurant with:

7 WC
4 Urinals
4 LAV
5 FD
1 Bar counter
1 Veg. Sink
1 slop sink
A.94.5
B.88
C.84.8
D.74.5
The question is very subjective that may produce different answers. But before I
show the solution on how to come up with the answer (according to the source is
A. 94.5), let's discuss the issues at hand:
First, the type of fixture is NOT clearly specified in the question. Note that t
here are different types of sinks, water closets, and urinals, each having their
own respective Fixture Unit Values. If we assume a wrong type of fixture, we ca
nnot get the correct total value.
Second, the FU (or fixture unit) is NOT specified whether it is for water supply
(i.e., WSFU) or for drainage (i.e., DFU). Assuming the question is asking for d
rainage fixture units (because the "5 FD" or Floor Drains were included in the l
ist), then, the total DFU value can never have any fractions (or decimal points)
since per RNPCP Table 7-2 (as well as other Codes), the DFU is always a whole n
umber.
So, if we follow this logic (of whole-numbered fixture unit values), choices A,
C, and D can never be the answer as they have remainders (decimal points). Only
B. 88 is whole.
The ONLY instance that a decimal/fraction MAY be arrived is IF you use the WSFU
for fixture units (making the 5 FD = 0), and ASSUMING that SELECTED fixtures wil
l ONLY provide COLD water while SOME fixtures will provide BOTH HOT & COLD water
supply. This is evident in Table 6-5 of the RNPCP where it states that the WSFU
values "Includes Combined Hot and Cold Water Demands".
So what would be the value for a "Cold Water Only" fixture? We need to take a cl
oser look at Appendix A of the RNPCP, Table A-1, where it states in Note #3, "Th
e given weights are for total demand for fixtures with BOTH hot and cold water s
upplies. THE WEIGHTS FOR MAXIMUM SEPARATE DEMANDS MAY BE TAKEN AS SEVENTY-FIVE (
75) PERCENT OF THE LISTED DEMAND FOR THE SUPPLY."
Given this 75% provision, we can assume selected fixtures that provides exclusiv
e COLD water ONLY (not HOT & COLD). Therefore, we take the WSFU value of such fi
xture as shown in the RNPCP table and multiply that by 0.75, hopefully, arriving
at a non-whole number similar to the choices given (choices A, C, and D).
So this is my calculation (assuming WSFU):
"7 WC"
Assuming: Flushometer valve, Public (in Table A-1 or "25mm outlet" in Table 6-5)
7 WC x 10 WSFU = 70 WSFU
Since Water Closets are supplied by Cold Water Only, we get 75% of that value,
70 WSFU * 0.75 = 52.5 WSFU (Cold)
"4 Urinals"
Assuming: Pedestal, Public (in Table A-1 and in Table 6-5)
4 Urinals x 10 WSFU = 40 WSFU
Getting only 75% (Cold Water Only), we have,
40 WSFU * 0.75 = 30 WSFU (Cold)
"4 LAV"
Public Lavatory: 4 LAV x 2 WSFU = 8 WSFU
8 WSFU * 0.75 = 6 WSFU (Cold)
"5 FD"
Not Applicable to WSFU, so, 0 value
"1 Bar Counter"
Assuming: Bar Sink, Public (in Table 6-5)
1 Bar Sink x 2 WSFU = 2 WSFU (Hot & Cold)
"1 Veg. Sink"
Assuming: Bar Sink or Wash-up Faucet Sink, Public (in Table 6-5) or Wash sink, c
ircular, Public (in Table A-1)
1 Wash sink x 2 WSFU = 2 WSFU (Hot & Cold)
"1 slop sink"
Assuming: Sink, service, Public (in Table A-1)
1 Service Sink x 2 WSFU = 2 WSFU (Hot & Cold)
TOTAL WSFU:
52.5 (Cold Only) + 30 (Cold Only) + 6 (Cold Only) + 0 + 2 + 2 + 2 = 94.5 FIXTURE
UNITS (assumed as WSFU, not DFU)
