Mrs. Tens and Mrs. Ones Role Play ( by Loralei Thomas ) Relate to looking for a Motel to stay in when travelling on holiday. often refer to the motels on Nebo Road in Mackay. Choose 8 children for the Role Play: Mrs. Tens, Mrs. Ones and The Traveller, who has been travelling on holiday and is looking for a room to sleep in tonight. Mrs. Tens and Mrs. Ones stand at the front of the room near the Tens and Ones houses attached to the white board. The “Traveller” looking for a room to sleep in tonight is given a unifix cube with blu-tac attached to the back. The Traveller knocks on Mrs. Ten’s house first- Mrs. Tens: “Hello, I'm Mrs. Tens. How can | help you?” Traveller. “Hello. Could | please have a BED to sleep in at your house tonight?” Mrs. Tens: “Oh! Are you in a group of ten?” Traveller: ‘No, I'm all by myself.” Mrs. Tens: “I'm sorry. I only take groups of TEN. Why don't you try Mrs. Ones.” Traveller: “Thank you, | will” Traveller walks fingers to Mrs. Ones house and says “Walk, walk, walk’, Traveller then knocks on Mrs. Ones house. Mrs. Ones: “Hello. 'm Mrs. Ones. How can | help you?” Traveller: “Hello. Could | please have a BED to sleep in at your house tonight?” Mrs. Ones: “Oh! Are you all by yourself?" Traveller. “Yes, | am.” if any of the rooms 1 through to 9 are still empty / available / VACANT, Mrs. Ones says the following- Mrs. Ones: — “Certainly. You can have room number ___. “( number of next room available). Child places unifix cube in appropriate room. lf all 9 rooms in Mrs. Ones house are full, Mrs Ones says the following- Mrs. Ones: “Oh! I'm sorry. My rooms are all filled up.” Traveller: — “Oh! No! There’s nowhere to go. | can’t go in Mrs. Tens house because I'm not in a group of ten and now I can’t go in Mrs. Ones house because her rooms are all filled up! ’m outside all by myself and it's COLD and now it's starting to RAIN! BOO! HOO! HOO! CLASS: DON'T WORRY. THE 9 OF US WILL COME OUT OF MRS.ONES HOUSE AND JOIN WITH YOU TO MAKE A GROUP OF TEN, THEN WE CAN ALL GO TO MRS. TENS HOUSE. Teacher helps Traveller to take the 9 unifix cubes out of Mrs. Ones house and to join with his, to make (1x stack of 4) and (2 x stacks of 3), so that they can fit into the space available in one of Mrs. Tens rooms. Child then knocks on Mrs, Tens house. Mrs. Tens: “Hello. I'm Mrs. Tens. How can | help you?" Traveller; “Hello, Could WE please have a BED to sleep in at your house tonight?” Mrs. Tens: “Oh! Are you in a group of ten?” Traveller: “Yes, WE ARE." Mrs.Tens: “Certainly. You can have room number __. °( number of next room available). Child places unifix cubes in appropriate room. QUESTIONS: AFTER THE UNIFIX CUBES HAVE BEEN PLACED IN MRS.TENS OR MRS. ONES HOUSE, THE TEACHER ASKS THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS TO HELP BEGIN TO DEVELOP THE. UNDERSTANDING OF PLACE VALUE. The Room Questions: How many ROOMS filed up in Mrs. Ones House? How many ROOMS filled up in Mrs, Tens House? The People Questions: How many PEOPLE in Mrs. Ones House? How many PEOPLE in Mrs. Tens House? HOW MANY PEOPLE IN THE TWO HOUSES ALTOGETHER? When doing this activity in association with the calendar, the next step is to cross this number off on the calendar. Notes: J usually start this activity in Term One, Year One, on a daily basis, when we do the day and the date with the calendar. (Starting on the first day of the month of course). it has only been in recent years that | have realized that this presents an excellent opportunity for daily practice, so that the children become familiar with the process and more importantly, have the ‘opportunity to GRADUALLY begin to understand the more, asian spent of 1 GROUP OF TEN. val werl Fattor, The 9 rooms in Mrs. Ones House are arranged in the "Easy Pattern” ( 3 rows of 3— The top row, the middle row and the bottom row.) 10 sits outside crying because he temporarily thinks that there is nowhere for him to go. | point out, that although Mrs. Tens has 9 rooms (THE SAME NUMBER OF ROOMS AS MRS. ONES), Mrs. Tens can fit 10 PEOPLE IN EACH OF HER 9 ROOMS. | bring to the children’s attention that Mrs. Ones and Mrs. Tens have 9 ROOMS in their houses as do Mrs. Hundreds, Mrs. Thousands, Mrs. Ten Thousands, Mrs. Hundred Thousands and EVEN Mrs. Millions! As the houses get BIGGER, the number of rooms stays the same, ( they all have 9 rooms in their houses), BUT THE ROOMS GET BIGGER so that MORE PEOPLE can fit into EACH ROOM. The houses get their names from the number of people that can fit into EACH ROOM, not from the number of people in the house ALTOGETHER When counting how many PEOPLE in the TWO houses, the strategy of COUNTING ON can also be taught and practised. Term 3. Counting, Place Value And The Collection Of Items For The Cent Sale At The Fitz Fair ‘The need to record the number of items collected for the Cent Sale at the Fitz Fair provides an excellent ‘opportunity to extend the process of teaching Place Value with the Mrs. Tens and Mrs. Ones (and hopefully Mrs. Hundreds) Role Play, as well as providing a real life PURPOSE for daily COUNTING PRACTICE. Since the class with the most items wins a prize, the children’s close involvement in the counting and recording of the number of items that have been brought in, enhances the chances of our class winning! Ihave laminated a commercial ‘Class List” poster for this purpose. Children’s names are only written on this poster when they bring in items for the Fair. This avoids any feelings of embarrassment for children who are unable to bring items in. Children receive 1 tick beside their names for each item that they bring in. EACH DAY the TOTAL number of ticks for the CLASS is calculated with the children To do this, EACH DAY | choose one child to write on the board, the (vertical) list of numbers recording how many items each child has brought in, Once this list is complete, the teacher shows the children how she adds the numbers to find the total for this "SUM". This number of UNIFIX CUBES is then placed into the Mrs. Tens and Mrs. Ones houses. ‘The teacher then shows the children how she adds the total for today to the total for any previous days to determine the number of items brought in so far. THIS RUNNING TOTAL is recorded on the side of the Class Poster, if a child completes a whole row of ticks and then brings in some more items, their name is written again ‘on 2 new row and a small star is drawn beside their name on the new row. The class chart also provides the opportunity to give the children practice in counting in 5's.
