This document contains an exam with 8 questions about probability, statistics, and confidence intervals. Question 1 involves calculating the expected profit of a casino game that pays out different amounts depending on the color of ball picked. Question 2 asks to construct a 95% confidence interval for the mean age of New York City 12th grade students using sample data. Question 3 asks for the probability of exactly 3 patients being cured out of a sample of 7, given the cure rate is 40%.

Answer any five questions

1. A casino game works like this: a bag contains 1 red

ball, 2 white balls and 7 blue balls. The player blindly
reaches into the bag and picks one of the ten balls.

If the ball picked is red, the player gets $100.

If the ball picked is white, the player gets $50.
If the ball picked is blue, the player gets $0.

The casino charges $22 to play the game.

a) How much profit on this game does the casino

expect to make on average per play?

b) If this game is played 5 million times per year,

how much profit on this game does the casino
expect to make per year?

2. Estimate the mean age of New York City 12th grade

students by constructing a 95% confidence interval.
A random sample of 100 New York City 12th grade
students has mean age of 17.5 years. Assume from
last year's data that the standard deviation of the
ages is 0.5 year.
3. The cure rate for Ebola patients in Liberia is 40%.
If a random sample of 7 Ebola patients in Liberia is
chosen, what is the probability that exactly 3 of
them will be cured?

4. The heights of American men are normally

distributed with a mean 68 inches and a standard
deviation of 3 inches. How tall are the tallest 10%
of American men?

5. The heights of American men are normally

distributed with a mean 68 inches and a standard
deviation of 3 inches. If a random sample of 9 of
these men is selected, what is the probability that
the sample mean height will be more than 69
inches?

6. What sample size is needed to construct a 99%

confidence interval for mean wait-time for patients
in Dr. Smiths office. You want the margin of error
to be less than 2 minutes. Assume that the standard
deviation of the wait-time is 5 minutes.

7. The heights of American men are normally

distributed with a mean 68 inches and a standard
deviation of 3 inches. What is the probability that a
randomly selected American man will be shorter
than 69 inches?

8. Estimate the mean age of New York City 12th grade

students by constructing a 95% confidence interval.
A random sample of 100 New York City 12th grade
students has mean age of 17.5 years with standard
deviation of 0.5 year.
