Each DCIS student must complete 5 hours of school service each semester. The purpose of this approval form is to provide an
opportunity to reflect on your contribution to the DCIS community and to track your progress toward meeting your program service
requirements. You may use the following questions as guidelines as you write a solid paragraph describing how this service
connects to specific outcomes in the four Global Leadership domains:
How did you identify this opportunity for school service (did someone recruit you, did you figure it out yourself, was it
part of a club, etc.)?
Describe how you worked collaboratively with others to perform your service.
What evidence can you present to demonstrate the impact of your service on our community (school, local, regional,
global)?
Reflect on how you changed as a result of your service.
Description of how this service connects to outcomes in the Global Leadership Domains:
I volunteered to pick up balloons and set up the venue for the Mile High Ministries Spring Event. Because MHM is a non
profit organization, they hold events throughout the year ( including the Spring Theatre Event) to raise money for formerly
homeless families that live at Joshua Station. Joshua Station is a transformational housing facility turned supportive
housing facility. My mother recruited me to help because they needed extra hands at a bigger venue. I worked
collaboratively with my mother and a few of her coworkers to pick-up/ transport balloons to the venue, set up tables,
distribute uniforms to the catering staff, placing centerpieces, helping with sign-in, and other general set up duties. I
impacted the local community by helping raise money for programs and housing costs for the 26 formerly homeless
families that live at Joshua Station. Ive changed because now I know that simple acts can make a big difference. This
community service opportunity connects to Communicate Ideas and Take Action. I had to select and apply appropriate
verbal and non-verbal communication strategies to set up and assist with seating and greeting guests. Joshua Station
donors are a diverse group of individuals and it takes a lot of change to adapt to that type of professional environment.
This also falls under the Take Action domain because it is community service by identifying projects to collaborate across
disciplines and industries and creating our own opportunities for improvement. I also had to assess options and plan
actions based on evidence or prior experience that indicate potential for impact. Then, I acted both individually and
collaboratively to contribute to improvement on homeless issues in the Denver Metro Area.
