The students theory of teaching effects of social media on individuals is
extremely useful because it sheds insight on the difficult problem of who can multitask,
and who has trouble focusing on anything other than their phone.
I agree with the authors view that mobile devices in classrooms arent for
everyone. I agree that some students are unable to multitask because my experience in
college classrooms confirms that.

Synthesis Gist
Although Bryan Goodwin and David Siegfried conclude that cell phones and social media are
detrimental to student success, JT Manuel, Thomas Laird and George Kuh believe that
technology use in classrooms allow for more student engagement and opportunities, while
Robert Shuter sees both sides of the argument where technology can help or hurt classroom
performance. David Siegfried focuses on the distractions on students that social medias, like
MySpace, have. His conclusion was that social medias are detrimental to everyones, including
students, productivity. Goodwin mentions several studies with college students, and one in
particular determined how students were recalling less information following a lessen due to the
distraction of cell phones. He also attempts to bust the myth of multitasking by citing research
done by cognitive psychologist Daniel Willingham where humans cannot actually multitask, but
rather they switch between tasks, causing concentration to be lost, especially in the
classroom.Manuel displays the students discovering a book that inspired their classroom idea.
Shuter interviews several college teachers, administrators and students from around the country
to support his claim. So many teachers want to incorporate apps and phone use in the
classroom, however these students find it significant to study themselves with using their
phones in class.

Thomas Laird and George Kuh both run several studies to support their claim on how
technology enhances student engagement. They also support their claim but reminding the
readers that 84% of college students own a laptop, and 99% of college students use a type of
technology.

Inquiry Questions for Survey

1. Do you think cell phone use helps or hinders your concentration and ability to
learn in the classroom? Do your grades reflect this?
2. Should students be allowed to choose whether or not they use cellphones or
laptops during class?
3. Does the use of technology in classrooms bring more opportunities to a student?
4. Why do you believe teachers/administrators would be against mobile devices in
classrooms?
5. What age were you allowed to have your first social media account?

Survey Results:

Over 90% of our results were freshmen in college and 100% of them were in college,
which means that these students have all had experiences with teachers and technology in high
school and higher education. This was necessary to know so we didnt have inexperienced
candidates. The results that we got from the second question, whether or not cell phones help
them in the class, were that most students thought that either it didnt help or it depends on the
class. Nobody reported that it would help them because most people believe that cell phones
are distractions.
