Interviewer: Thank you for coming in to speak to us today.


Dr Astro: Its a pleasure to be on the show.
Interviewer: Now, what exactly is space rubbish?
Dr Astro: Space rubbish consists of ordinary litter. It includes tools, plastic bags,
broken pens and paint.
Interviewer: How does the rubbish get into space?
Dr Astro: Well, astronauts sometimes throw rubbish out of spacecraft. Also,
metal and paint often break off rockets and satellites.
Interviewer: Surely the amount of rubbish in space is very small?

Dr Astro: Not at all! I think there are more than 600,000 pieces of space rubbish.
Interviewer: Is the rubbish dangerous for people on Earth?
Dr Astro: No, most rubbish burns up in the atmosphere. However, the rubbish is
very dangerous for astronauts.
Interviewer: How is it dangerous for astronauts?
Dr Astro: Well, space rubbish moves at thousands of kilometres per hour. If the
rubbish hits spacecraft it causes serious damage.
Interviewer: That does sound worrying. Can we do anything about the rubbish?
Dr Astro: I think the Space Agency is exploring different ways to tidy up the
rubbish.
Interviewer: Glad to hear it! Thanks for your time.
Dr Astro: No problem. Goodbye.
