Lesson Plan 3 Practicum 2

This lesson plan is for a Grade 7 math class on calculating the area and circumference of circles. The lesson will involve students rotating between 7 stations in groups of 4 over 60 minutes. At each station, students will complete hands-on activities to understand concepts like radius, diameter, circumference, and Pi. These include using objects to measure circumference and diameter to determine Pi, solving problems with question cards and puzzles, and playing a board game. The goal is for students to gain a better understanding of circles and be able to calculate area and circumference. The teacher will evaluate students by observing their work at stations and asking questions to check their understanding.

Lesson Planning 3- Practicum 2

Name: Fan Feng Date: Wednesday April 4th 2017 Time: Period 3

Grade Level: 7 Subject: Grade 7 Math Teacher Mentor: Mrs. Shari Foley

I. Provincial/ Specific Curriculum Outcome (s):

GCO: Shape & Space (SS): Use direct and indirect measurement to solve problems
SCO: SS2: Develop and apply a formula for determining the area of:
circles. [CN, PS, R, V]

II. Learning Objective(s) / Goal (s) (Big Ideas, Key Questions)

Students will be able to understand the radius & circumference of a circle and calculating area of circles
with the learning of hand-on activities.

III. Lesson Rationale:

What is the overall purpose of this lesson?
-The purpose of this lesson is for students to gain a better understanding of simple facts about circles
and relationship between diameter and circumference, and have a better idea understanding Pi.

What requisite skills do students need in order to access the lesson & participate fully in this lesson?
-Students will need to know what circle, Pi, circumference, area, radius, diameter is. This will help them
have an easier time understanding all the concepts.

How does the lesson build on previous lessons or previous learning?

-It will work as a summary to what we did so far, students will be able to understand easy concepts with
hand-on materials.

IV. Materials & Resources:

-Calculators, Playdoh, Buckets, Cans, Scissors, Tape
-Handouts

V. Technology Used:
N/A
VI. Learning Cycle: (Total: 60 mins)

1. Opening: (5 mins)
a. Give a brief overview on the agenda of all centres to the students, talk about what my
expectations from them. Students are divided into group of 4, 7 groups in total.
b. Groups rotate every 15 mins.

2. Main activities& Closure (55 mins)

Station 1: Finding area & circumference using question cards.

St. Thomas University - School of Education

Station 2: Finding Pi with objects, students are expected to measure the circumference
and diameter of the object, and finding out the pi for each object.

Station 3: Task Cards-Students are expected to answer questions on the question cards.

Station 4: Board Game: Students are expected to answer questions using calculators
from the book they read yesterday.

Station 5: Puzzle, Students are expected to complete the puzzle by finding area and
circumference of the circle.

St. Thomas University - School of Education

Station 6: Understanding Pi, students are expected to use playdoh to measure the
circumference and diameter and then determine the pi.

Station 7: Finding circumference & area using cards.

VII. Accommodation(s) for Diverse Learner(s):

-In this specific class, there is one student who is on the personalized modified program, however, he
will be able to work through all centres with the help of his group member and teacher/EA in the
classroom.

VIII. Evaluation/Assessment of Student Progress:

-Ask students questions and let them explain what they learnt and help them with solving the problems,
inspire them during the centres.
-Constantly checking on students understanding by asking them questions regarding to specific
centres.
