FN 10 ASSIGNMENT NO. 1

PART 1. NARRATIVE: The BSCN Program and Me

1. Why are you enrolled in FN 10?

I enrolled in FN 10 with the presumption that this subject matter will help me

anticipate and comprehend the future subjects in BS Community Nutrition, since FN

10, an introductory course, gives a solid foundation of what to expect in this field of

study.

2. Was BSCN your first choice? If YES, what made you decide to take it? If NO,

what course was your first choice? Why?

I am currently enrolled in another course, BS Electronics and Communications

Engineering, thus BS Community Nutrition wasnt my first choice. I was a DPWAS

(Degree Program with Available Slot) enrollee upon passing the UPCAT, and being a

DPWAS enrollee, I was tasked to choose a course among the courses which have

available slots left, and I choice BS Computer Engineering, a course also offered in

EEEI (Electrical and Electronics Engineering Institute), the same with BS ECE, as

urged by my mother and brothers.

3. What made you eventually take up BSCN?

I have always been interested in being a medical practitioner because my mother

and brother both pursued a degree in nursing, but I was not able to pursue it

because I got accepted into a different course. Thus, only after I have been enrolled
this semester in a VSO (Voluntary Shifting-out) status, I have decided to take the

subjects in the curriculum of BSCN to eventually shift into the college and be able to

pursue a degree in line with my interests and academic aptitude.

4. What are your initial impressions of the BSCN program?

My initial impressions of the BSCN was that the program was not only focused on

the heavy academics-based subjects such as biology and chemistry subjects in the

curriculum, but the program also offers courses that prepares students in a more

socially inclined and adept approach. In a sense, the BSCN program hones the

students to be a well-rounded undergraduate in the field of Nutrition and Dietetics.

5. What do you think are the career opportunities of the BSCN graduates?

Would you be pursuing one of these career options? If YES, what and why? If

NO, why?

The BSCN program is so diverse that a graduate student has different options on

what to pursue after graduating from the academia, such as being a nutritionist and

also a medical student. I am planning to be a medical student after finishing my

undergraduate degree here in the university. In doing so, I would be able to pursue

my interest of being a medical practitioner.

6. How do you feel about being a student of the College of Home Economics?

I feel both nervous and excited of being an official student, hopefully next semester,

of the College of Home Economics. I feel nervous, since until now, there is no 100%

assurance that I will get accepted into the college next semester, but also excited

since this semester I am taking subjects which are very different from what I was

used to studying and even more ecstatic when I think of being finally being accepted

into the college.

PART 2. MAKING A RESPONSE ESSAY

1. What is a reflection paper?

A reflection paper is the writers chance to incorporate his/her own thoughts and

analysis to what he/she has read or experienced about a particular topic or event. It

offers the writer an opportunity to consider how his/her personal experiences may

shape his/her own way of thinking and how he/she can be receptive of new ideas

(IIRP, 2015).

2. What are the parts of a reflection paper?

A reflection writing is also similar to other types of essays thus, its main parts are the

introduction, body, and conclusion. After the introduction, a brief discussion about the

topic should be discussed. In the body, the writer should explain, in main points,

what are his/her remarks about the given topic. Then, the writer should summarize

all final comments and thoughts about the given topic (The Guide on Reflection

Paper Format, 2012).

3. What is a critique paper?

A critique paper gives a critical and expository assessment of a book or article on

any given particular topic. It briefly summarizes and analyzes a variety of works such

as researches, creative works, and media (Writing a critique, 2016).

4. What are the parts of a critique paper?

A critique uses a formal, academic writing style and has a clear structure, that is, an

introduction, body, and conclusion. Although the body of a critique paper includes a

brief summary and detailed evaluation of the given work or topic. (Writing a critique,

2016).
5. What is the difference between a reflection and critique paper?

A reflection paper focuses on reflecting on an experience and involves rendering on

current understandings to purposefully think about an experience. This papers aims

to wander through the writers personal insights and opinions about a certain topic.

While a critique paper has a more unbiased and impartial recognition of ones work.

A critique paper is more formal in a sense that it gauges the work not only by the

writers opinion but also others as well. The two papers differ mainly on the intent of

what the writer want to express about a particular topic or work, and the purpose of

the writing.

FN 10 ASSIGNMENT NO. 2

1.

A. Joya painting

The works of National Artist Jose T. Joya can be found at the lobby and Clothing

Museum (the original painting) of the College of Home Economics. These paintings

are heavily represented by painted polygons of different colors and patterns. At first

glance, it was just an abstract painting but as I had looked further and read the text

beside it, I realized that the different colored polygons can be interpreted as the

different fields of study offered in the college. This shows the college as a cradle of

boundless different fields of study spanning from the Department of Clothing, Textiles

and Related Arts (DCTRA), Department of Family Life and Child Development

(DFLCD), Department of Home Economics Education (DHEed), and the Department

of Food Science and Nutrition (DFSN) during the 1960s.

B. Wooden sculpture

Ansel Day-ags 1960s wooden sculptures main figure is that of an image of a family.

The four sculptures on the background, at the upper right side of the main figure can

be interpreted as the different fields of study offered in the college during the 1960s,

such as DCTRA, DFLCD, DHEed, and DFSN. This shows the family as the center of

the disciplines offered by the college, which Day-ag showcased through four

traditional homes as reminisce of his Igorot roots.

2. You will also find in the CHE Main Building the CHE logo. Based on your

perception, interpret the logo.

The logo shows an individual cradling another individual inside a home. I think the

simplicity of the logo shows the mission and vision of the college as a whole, that the

College of Home Economics wants to enhance the quality of day-to-day living of

families and consumers. The logo can be interpreted in both a specific focus, such

as ones own family, and a larger perspective, such as the society as a whole. It also

can be interpreted in such a way that the college aims to address the matter of the

living, specifically us humans, and their interactions with relationships with family,

among families, between families and the larger community; and as well as

examining the interaction and harmonization of these elements. (Mission and

Vision, 2016).

3. Who is Teodora Alonso? Why is the CHE Main Building named after Teodora

Alonso? Do you think it is an appropriate name for the CHE Main Building?

Teodora Morales Alonso Realonda y Quintos or better known as Teodora Alonso was

the mother of the Philippine National Hero, Jose Rizal. As a mother and teacher of

the young Jose Rizal, she molded the spirit and thoughts of Rizal. As a dedicated,

courteous, and hard working mother, she had profound influence on his sons

development (Craig, 1913). The late UP President Carlos P. Romulo suggested the

name of Teodora Alonso as the icon for the main building for the College of Home

Economics when it was founded in 1961. I think the name of Alonso was suggested

because as mother figure to Rizal who influenced him greatly, the College of Home

Economics also has a similar intent to its students, for the college to influence its

students into being well-rounded individuals who are conscious and concerned with

the issues and challenges facing families which require understanding of societal

developments. I think it is appropriate to name the CHE Main Building in honor of

Alonso, since as the College of Home Economics aims to prepare and educate

leaders in the various fields of home economics, to contribute to the enhancement of

the quality of life of Filipinos, and to strengthen the family as a foundation of the

nation, these encompasses the traits and attributes of Alonso which have been

influential in Rizals growth and development of which the college aims to be towards

its students.
