Bernal - WORK

The document discusses different perspectives on the meaning and purpose of work. It describes work both as a spiritual act that cultivates wisdom when done with love and as a source of stress and alienation when it dominates one's life and sells off portions of their humanity. While work can connect people to themselves, others, and God, it can also consume over a third of people's lives spent at jobs that do not treat them with the dignity they deserve. Overall, the document debates whether current work structures and conditions appropriately value humanity.

Bernal, Kyle D.

3BIO3

The excerpt talks about more than just the meaning of work but also it pushes us to

see more from our own perspective and get a glimpse of what is more than just what

we could perceive. It speaks of how we should live our lives by moving us spiritually

with wisdom through its poetic piece. It is so deep and compelling that it forces us to

contemplate on the subject. Every aspect of human labor is collective in nature, and

productivity depends on the harmony of social structures within a system. Almost

everybody see work as a source of stress and hardship, but to Kahlil, it depends on

how we take it ourselves the value of our labor. It is for us to see, in a more extensive

manner, our purpose of existence. He also said that when one works with love, one

attaches himself to his own self, to others and to God. There is less stress when we

love what we do, and when we do what we love. I think we are not only talking of

labor here as a job, but also how we make use of ourselves as a helping hand to others

who are in need of our assistance. We should wholeheartedly provide our guidance,

service and support to others in their difficult times and not expect anything in return.

Altruism for this matter, is an extreme case of our usefulness to others that we

succumb to selflessness. I also disagree with his concept of work, the fact that he sees

work as a selfless act and as something plainly positive, we cannot deny that it is

stressful and tiring because there is also a concept that as an employee, we sell the

most human part of our lives, our creative and productive abilities, which we call

labor. Like for example, engineers who work for company of others, the skills they

have acquired and the knowledge they previously poured themselves into during their

college years is making the company productive and progressive. But they cannot just

simply quit as it is the primary source of their living. And several other examples in
the same concept as this. It is a burden that we only feel free only when outside of our

working hours, where we concentrate on our lesser, human needs for rest and

consumption. In this way, the worker is alienated from her own humanity. She is least

herself when building and creating, and feels most at home when is least human. And

not only that, it is brought about the eight-hour workday and weekend. Some workers

are not even treated the way they deserve it. You work full-time and half of your life

your working years will be spent at work. Are you happy to have your work

achievements take up over a third of your life for these years? Consider how many

other people are similarly devoting this portion of their lives to work, and what it all

adds up to. Is our standard of living worth a third of our lives? Is this what a third of

humanitys hours should amount to?
