Ces512 Group Project - Student Version

This document outlines a group project for a course on computational analysis for engineers. It describes the relevant course and program outcomes, including developing skills as a member or leader of a diverse team. It provides details of the retaining wall analysis and design project, which involves examining topographic maps and cross sections to plan and size a retaining wall construction. It lists six specific objectives for the project, which will involve both manual calculations and MATLAB simulations. Guidelines are provided for the project report submission.

engineering problems.

PO9 Ability to function effectively as an individual, and as a member or leader

in diverse teams and in multi-disciplinary settings. (A1-A5)

1.1 Learning Outcomes

At the end of the tasks, student will be able:

a) to display distinct responsibilities as a member or leader in diverse teams and multi-

displinary fields in order to solve real retaining wall analysis and design (CO3:PO9:
A1)
b) to actively involved in the group discussion on producing the process of problem
solving (CO3:PO9: A3)
c) to brain storm effectively the ideas in group as leader/member (CO3:PO9: A3)
d) to examine the required task as a member/team leader (CO3:PO9: A4)
e) to manage and fulfil the project requirement with specific social skills on solving the
civil engineering complex problem within a group (CO3: PO9: A5)

As CES 512 is applying this affective domain, the course allowing students response for
them to learn, to value, to organize and maybe even to characterize teamwork, leadership
and social skills required by PO9.

1.3 LEVEL OF INDEPENDENCE AND AUTONOMY EXPECTED

A raw phenomenon of engineering project is provided to the student and chooses the
project to explore, develops a procedure for solving the project, decides what data to gather
and interpret the data to propose the viable solutions.

ANALYSIS DESIGN
You are given a topographic map shown in Figure 1(scale 1:200) and the cross section at A-
A section of a proposed building on a typical residential area (Figure 2). You and your team
members are required to examine the given Figure 1 and 2 to perform a retaining wall
construction project from the land preparation until to its design. All of the unit given are in
meters.
You are required to:
i. form a group with 5 members only. Please fill up the Group Formation Form and submit it
together with your report.
ii. manage and act on the SIX (6) objectives specified in Table 1 and starting the work from 24
of October 2016 and ending by 12 Dec 2016.The data for your group task are given in the
Appendix Sheet.
iii. work within your group with certain social skills on completing the project as required by
PO9.

2.1 Task to be completed

In order to complete the given project, you are responsible:

to create the organisational chart of the project of the FIVE (5) persons per group
identify the function, responsibilities and scope of work for each person involved in
the given group project identify the types of submission documents for each person
on solving the task
show the integration of cooperation within the group in order to solve the given task

3.0 GUIDELINE OF THE REPORT

In this project, you and your group members are advice to follow the proposed tasks
