Tutorial Cpter 5 (Transformation)

This document provides examples and explanations of linear transformations. It defines several linear transformations T from vector spaces or polynomial spaces to other vector or polynomial spaces. It asks for the codomain, standard matrix, kernel basis and nullity, range basis and rank, and whether each transformation is one-to-one or onto for each example. It also asks whether some transformations have inverses.

T ( x, y, z ) = (2 x 2 z , x + y, y + z , x z )

i) State the codomain of T and the dimension of codomain.

ii) State the standard matrix A for the transformation T.

iii) Find a basis for the kernel of T and state the nullity of T.

iv) Find a basis for the range of T and state the rank of T.

v) Is T one-to-one? Give a reason for your answer.

vi) Is T onto? Give a reason for your answer.

2. The transformation T : P2 P2 is defined as

T (a0 + a1 x + a 2 x 2 ) = (a 0 + a1 + a 2 ) + (a1 + a 2 ) x + a 2 x 2
