Code of Ethics Assignment
Portfolio Entry #9
The Code of Ethics of the Education Profession was created by the National Education

Association (NEA) as a guideline for teachers on how to interact with students and fellow

teachers. The Code of Ethics outlines the teachers moral duties and obligations to the teaching

profession. NEAs mission is to ensure each and every student in the United States has the

opportunity to receive an education. They also advocate for teachers and want a great public

school for each student. All of their beliefs and values are reflected in the Code of Ethics.

In reading through the Code of Ethics, I think they are still very valid and useful today.

The commitment to student principles are all things we do as educators, but are good reminders

and should be reviewed from time to time. I especially like number 8, ...Shall not disclose

information about students obtained in the course of professional service, unless disclosure

serves a compelling professional purpose or is required by law. As a special education teacher,

maintaining student confidentiality is extremely important to me. The commitment to the

profession principles are good reminders as well. I do not think number 5 (assisting a

noneducator to teach) applies anymore, but the other principles are very important.

Collaboration is essential and in order to effectively collaborate, teachers need to respect each

other and be honest. These principles remind us of that.

I think the Code of Ethics will help me reflect on my teaching practice and improve my

professionalism if needed. When I think about some ethical decisions I have been faced with in

the past, I think I could have been more discreet and only talked to the people that were

necessary to solve the problem. I will be more mindful of this going forward in my career.
