Keywords: Nano Patch Antenna, Ansoft HFSS 13.0, Terahertz, Substrate Materials

This document describes the design and simulation of a rectangular microstrip patch antenna for terahertz applications using various substrate materials at the nano scale. The antenna was designed and optimized in Ansoft HFSS 13.0 by varying parameters like length, width, substrate properties, and materials. Return loss, VSWR, gain, and directivity were analyzed for substrates including graphite, quartz, silica, silicon, polyamide, aluminum, gold, and FR4 epoxy. The results show that a nano-scale microstrip antenna design is suitable for terahertz applications and a comparative analysis of performance for different substrate materials was conducted with a focus on graphite.

ABSTRACT

Rectangular Microstrip patch antenna with graphite material at nano scale has
been designed using Ansoft HFSS 13.0. The main objective of this project is to design
a rectangular microstrip patch antenna for terahertz applications has been designed by
simulation through the structural optimization according to the desired design
specification like antenna dimensions length (L), Width (W) and substrate parameters.
Substrate relative permittivity (r), substrate thickness and bandwidth are considered
in order to calculate the dimensions of the patch. Substrate with low dielectric
constant is preferred for better performance hence few materials with less r are used
as the substrate. The conducting patch can take any shape because of less complexity
to analyze; so rectangular configurations are most commonly used. The different
materials are Graphite, Quartz, Silica, Silicon, Polyamide, Aluminum, Gold and FR4
Epoxy which were used in this project. The return loss (S 11), VSWR, Gain and
Directivity for each of the above mentioned materials are observed, analyzed and it is
proved that the design of the Microstrip antenna at nano scale is suitable for terahertz
application. In this paper, an attempt has been made to perform comparative analysis
of various substrate materials to a graphite based rectangular Microstrip nano patch
antenna.
