Plesiochronous Digital Hierarchy - Wikipedia

The plesiochronous digital hierarchy (PDH) is a technology used to transport large quantities of data over digital networks. PDH networks allowed transmission of nominally synchronized data streams that were allowed to vary slightly in speed. Backbone networks replaced most PDH networks with synchronous digital hierarchy or synchronous optical networking by 2000 due to their more stringent timing requirements.
