Statement of Purpose

My name is Waseem Akram, I was born in Jhang, the most populous city of Punjab, Pakistan and
raised by a middle class family, which considers education as a very high priority. My father is a
Government Employee, he is the one who always encourages me to keep learning and upgrading
me with knowledge. He always says that only through Education you can get success and honor in
your life. My mother always says that I was a curious and inquisitive child back then, which I think
is quite true. Even now, I am quite curious about new knowledge.

The belief that an education is most valuable when it is used to serve ones community has been
instilled in me. This conviction and a natural aptitude for science in Chemical engineering was the
most fitting career for me. In fact, they continue to be the driving forces in my pursuit of academic
excellence as a senior at the University of Gujrat. I desire a degree in Chemical engineering not
only because it is the most fulfilling way I can exercise my natural talents as a scholar, but because
it also gives me the opportunity to solve challenges directly impacting my community.

I spent four years at University of Gujrat, Pakistan, pursuing my degree in Chemical Engineering
and finally graduated in September 2015. In my graduation years, I have acquired a strong and
comprehensive background in the fundamentals of Chemical Process, Heat Transfer, Mass
Transfer, Fuel & Combustion, Fluid Mechanics, Environmental Engineering, Gas Engineering,
Chemical Process Design & Optimization and many more. I have done more than what my peers
do in studying the coursework. These efforts are reflected in the excellent grades I received. I
ranked No.2 out of all the students in the most of my professional courses and my GPA ranked 2nd
(3.80/4) in 61 students in my class. I did my final year project on production of 40000bbl/day S-
15 from raw diesel by using Hydrodesulphurization technique and designed distillation column.
I also got industrial training during my summer internship in Dandot cement company Limited
Pakistan.

During these four years, in addition to my involvement with university academics, I also had
myself engaged in extracurricular activities such as research projects. My first fascination to
research happened during my second year of engineering when I was working in industry and my
project coordinator asked me about my career plan. I replied I want to do operations job in some
process industry. Then what he said to me I still remember, Dont waste your abilities on doing
formal jobs, world really needs good researchers so come and do some great. It was the moment
when I felt first time that I should go for research. After that I started research.

Upon receiving my Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering, I plan to continue my education

by pursuing a Masters degree in chemical Engineering from King Fahd University of Petroleum
& Minerals (KFUPM). My interest in Chemical engineering was sparked by topics such as the
theory of extraction, purification and oil refinery improvement methods introduced to me in my
fundamentals of Chemical Engg Course. It was further cultivated when I began attending seminars
presented by the Chemical engineering program and participating in undergraduate research.
Besides this I also designed a cyclone separator under the title of Utilization of cyclone separator
for clean environment. It has gradually become my professional aspiration and ultimately driven
me to a definite desire as a research expert.

In order to improve my qualifications I was looking for such an institute which should match with
my professional experience and my research interests. I searched and found that King Fahd
University of Petroleum & Minerals (KFUPM) could be a best match for me in Dhahran, Saudi
Arabia. Whenever I think of studying in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, I memorize the words famous for,
Saudi Arabia Diversity, Quality and Opportunity. It is recognized in the world as a center of
excellence in learning. King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals (KFUPM) stands
prominently among the top universities of Saudi Arabia every year. Only this university can offer
state of the art facilities and cutting edge research opportunities providing a platform to walk on
the footsteps of the worlds influential thinkers. I am certain that Saudi Arabia, as a socially
advanced and technology developed country, is a perfect place for me to hone my skills and help
shape me into an intellectually competent researcher.

I see postgraduate course at King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals (KFUPM) as a
golden opportunity for me because this is too much in line with my ideas, my professional
experience, and future plans. I see myself as an ideal candidate for Saudi Arabia Government
Scholarship; I am quite hopeful that after completing my postgraduate from (KFUPM), I will then
be equipped in a much better way to serve my country and ultimately the whole world. More
importantly, I wish to become a renowned professional in Chemical engineering. Chemical
Engineering industry is massive and availability of more Chemical engineers in the whole world
will keep the industry stable, a foreign training I shall be exposed to during the masters degree
course, should I be selected, will surely be directed at full_ filling this vision.

At last, I will conclude with my future plans. I have the ambition to conduct research, later, in the
field of Chemical Engineering. I would like to contribute to welfare of humanity in an efficient
way. My study plan is to earn Master Degree, then a PhD: this is how I envision my academic
progress. Perhaps in the future I might have myself a place in a well know university or company
conducting research and obtaining some degree of influence over actual challenges -that is,
becoming a problem solver myself in the near future.

Sincerely,

Waseem Akram
