Table of blasting qualities and their descriptions.
Standard Method Description of finish
Poorly adhering millscale, rust and old paint and foreign matter are removed. Well adhered
Sa 1 Blast Cleaning
contaminants remain.
Sa 2 Blast Cleaning Most of the millscale rust and paint etc are removed and any remaining is very well adhered.
Millscale, rust paint and foreign matter is removed completely. Any remaining traces are visible only
Sa 2 Blast Cleaning
as slight stains or discoloration in the form of spots or stripes.
All millscale, rust etc is removed and the surface has a uniform white metal appearance with no
Sa 3 Blast Cleaning
shading, stripes, spots of discoloration.
Hand or
St 2 Poorly adhering rust, millscale etc are removed, leaving surface contamination that is well adhered.
Powertool
Hand or
St 3 As for St 2, but the surface now exhibits a metallic sheen arising from the metal substrate.
Powertool
Almost all millscale, rust and other surface contamination is removed leaving only a metallic sheen,
F1 Flame
but some discoloration due to shading left by remaining contaminants.
All surface contamination including all millscale rust, etc is removed, leaving a uniformly grey clean
Be Acid Pickling
surface. Paint etc must be removed prior to acid cleaning by some other means.
Notes
'Poorly adhering' is defined for millscale as 'able to be removed by lifting with a knife blade.'
Acid cleaning is not normally used for any other coating system than for galvanizing.
For galvanizing, even when steel has been blast cleaned, it is always acid cleaned as well. Therefore for hot dip
galvanizing, blast cleaning is rarely required, except to remove paint, severe rust, or for creating a thicker
galvanized coating.

An organic compound is any member of a large class of chemical compounds whose molecules contain carbon and
hydrogen; therefore, carbides, carbonates, carbon oxides and elementary carbon are not organic (see below for more
on the definition controversy for this word). The study of organic compounds is termed organic chemistry, and since
it is a vast collection of chemicals (over half of all known chemical compounds), systems have been devised to
classify organic compounds. A few of the compound classes based on the functional groups they carry are as follows:
Acid anhydrides
Acyl halides
Alcohols
Aldehydes
Alkanes
Alkenes
Amides
Amines
Aromatics
Azo compounds
Carboxylic acids
Esters
Ethers
Haloalkanes
Imines
Ketones
Nitriles
Nitro compounds
Organometallic compounds
Phenols
Polymers, including all plastics
Thiols
