Power Tool Safety Rules

WARNING:

Read and understand all instructions. Failure to follow all instructions

listed below, may result in electric shock, fire and/or serious personal
injury.

SAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS

Work Area

Electricians rubber gloves and footwear

will further enhance your personal
safety.

Keep your work area clean and well lit.

Cluttered benches and dark areas invite
accidents.
Do not operate power tools in explosive
atmosphere, such as in the presence of
flammable liquids, gases, or dust. Power
tools create sparks which may ignite the
dust or fumes.
Keep bystanders, children, and visitors away
while operating a power tool. Distractions
can cause you to lose control.

Dont expose power tools to rain or wet

conditions. Water entering a power tool
will increase the risk of electric shock.
Do not abuse the cord. Never use the cord to
carry the tools or pull the plug from an outlet.
Keep cord away from heat, oil, sharp edges or
moving parts. Replace damaged cords
immediately. Damaged cords increase
the risk of electric shock.

Electrical Safety for Vacuum

Double insulated tools are equipped with a
polarized plug (one blade is wider than the
other.) This plug will fit in a polarized outlet
only one way. If the plug does not fit fully in
the outlet, reverse the plug. If it still does not
fit, contact a qualified electrician to install a
polarized outlet. Do not change the plug in
any way. Double insulation eliminates the
need for the three wire grounded power
cord and grounded power supply
system. Before plugging in the tool, be
certain the outlet voltage supplied is
within 10% of the voltage marked on the
nameplate. Do not use AC only rated
tools with a DC power supply.
Avoid body contact with grounded surfaces
such as pipes, radiators, ranges and
refrigerators. There is an increased risk
of electric shock if your body is
grounded. If operating the power tool in
damp locations is unavoidable, a
Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter must be
used to supply the power to your tool.

When operating a power tool outside, use an

outdoor extension cord marked W-A or
W. These cords are rated for outdoor
use and reduce the risk of electric
shock. Refer to Recommended Sizes of
Extension Cords in the Accessory
section of this manual.

Personal Safety
Stay alert, watch what you are doing and use
common sense when operating a power tool.
Do not use tool while tired or under the
influence of drugs, alcohol, or medication. A
moment of inattention while operating
power tools may result in serious
personal injury.
Dress properly. Do not wear loose clothing or
jewelry. Contain long hair. Keep your hair,
clothing, and gloves away from moving parts.
Loose clothes, jewelry, or long hair can
be caught in moving parts. Keep
handles dry, clean and free from oil and
grease.

Avoid accidental starting. Be sure switch is

OFF before plugging in. Carrying tools
with your finger on the switch or
plugging in tools that have the switch
ON invites accidents.
Remove adjusting keys before turning the
tool ON. A key that is left attached to a
rotating part of the tool may result in
personal injury.
Do not overreach. Keep proper footing and
balance at all times. Proper footing and
balance enables better control of the
tool in unexpected situations.
Use safety equipment. Always wear eye
protection. Dust mask, non-skid safety
shoes, hard hat, or hearing protection
must be used for appropriate
conditions.

Tool Use and Care

Use clamps or other practical way to secure
and support the workpiece to a stable
platform. Holding the work by hand or
against your body is unstable and may
lead to loss of control.

Store idle tools out of reach of children and

other untrained persons. Tools are
dangerous in the hands of untrained
users.
Maintain tools with care. Keep cutting tools
sharp and clean. Properly maintained
tools with sharp cutting edges are less
likely to bind and are easier to control.
Any alteration or modification is a
misuse and may result in a dangerous
condition.
Check for misalignment or binding of moving
parts, breaking of parts, and any other
condition that may affect the tools operation.
If damaged, have the tool serviced before
using. Many accidents are caused by
poorly maintained tools. Develop a
periodic maintenance schedule for your
tool.
Use only accessories that are recommended
by the manufacturer for your model.
Accessories that may be suitable for one
tool, may become hazardous when used
on another tool.

Service

Do not force tool. Use the correct tool for

your application. The correct tool will do
the job better and safer at the rate for
which it is designed.

Tool service must be performed only by

qualified repair personnel. Service or
maintenance performed by unqualified
personnel could result in a risk of injury.

Do not use tool if vacuum switch does not

turn it ON or OFF. Any vacuum that
cannot be controlled with the switch is
dangerous and must be repaired.

When servicing a tool, use only identical

replacement parts. Follow instructions in the
Maintenance section of this manual. Use of
unauthorized parts or failure to follow
Maintenance Instructions may create a
risk of electric shock or injury. Certain
cleaning agents such as gasoline,
carbon tetrachloride, ammonia, etc. may
damage plastic parts.

Disconnect the plug from the power source

before making any adjustments, changing
accessories, or storing the tool. Such
preventative safety measures reduce
the risk of starting the tool accidentally.

Ultra Carver Safety Rules

Always let the high speed do the engraving,
do not force the bits. If turbine bogs down,
lift up and let the speed do the cutting
for you.

Never start the tool when the bit is engaged

in the material. The bit cutting edge may
grab the material causing loss of control
of the cutter.

Always turn the vacuum off and unplug from

the outlet to change bits.

Never use dull or damaged bits. Sharp bits

must be handled with care. Damaged bits
can snap during use. Dull bits require
more force to push the tool, possibly
causing the bit to break.

Only use .062 or 1/16 inch shanks rated for

120,000 RPM. Anything larger will
damage the turbine and may cause the
bit to shatter.
Hold tool by insulated gripping surfaces
when performing an operation where the
cutting tool may contact hidden wiring or its
own cord. Contact with a live wire will
make exposed metal parts of the tool
live and shock the operator. If cutting
into existing walls or other blind areas
where electrical wiring may exist is
unavoidable, disconnect all fuses or
circuit breakers feeding this worksite.
Never hold the workpiece in one hand and
the tool in the other hand when in use. Never
place hands near or below cutting surface.
Clamping the material and guiding the
tool with both hands is safer.
Always wear safety goggles and dust mask.
Use only in well ventilated area. Using
personal safety devices and working in
safe environment reduces risk of injury.
After changing the bits or making any
adjustments, make sure the collet nut and
any other adjustment devices are securely
tightened. Loose adjustment devices can
unexpectedly shift causing loss of
control, loose rotating components will
be violently thrown.

Never touch the bit during or immediately

after use. After use, the bit is too hot to
be touched by bare hands.
Never lay the tool down until the turbine has
come to a complete standstill. The spinning
bit can grab the surface and pull the
tool out of your control.
Do not use the tool for drilling purposes. This
tool is not intended to be used with drill
bits.
Some dust created by power sanding,
sawing, grinding, drilling, and other
construction activities contains
chemicals known to cause cancer, birth
defects or other reproductive harm.
Some examples of these chemicals are:
Lead from lead-based paints
Crystalline silica from bricks and
cement and other masonry products,
and
Arsenic and chromium from
chemically-treated lumber.
Your risk from these exposures varies,
depending on how often you do this type
of work. To reduce your exposure to these
chemicals: work in well ventilated area, and
work with approved safety equipment, such
as those dust masks that are specially
designed to filter out microscopic particles.

Setting Up the Ultra Carver

How to Choose the Best Bit

None

Selecting the proper bit for each job is

as important to the quality of your work
as the personal touch and technique
you develop. There are many bits to
choose from. .062 (1/16) shank only fit
the Ultra Carver. The type of material
you are engraving on and the type of cut
you wish to make will help in the
selection. You should try many different
types on all surfaces. Dont be afraid to
experiment to find the bit that works
best for you. Following is a
recommendation chart to help in your
selection. (The following chart is not
intended to be the final answer, only a
suggested starting point.)

Vacuum
Any vacuum cleaner or shop vac with
1 hose end with hose attachment.
Standard fitting if tools are attached just
remove. Attach hose end to universal
adapter. (1A) Press in firmly. (2A) If
vacuum has suction adjustment, turn on
low setting.

Inserting Bits
Insert your desired bit into the Ultra Carver. (1B) Press down until it bottoms out.
(2B) Next, take the universal key and attach to bottom nut of Ultra Carver. (3B) Take
the other key and attach to top nut. (4B) Now, while holding bottom key firmly, rotate
top key CLOCKWISE until firmly tight. (5B) Next, try pulling up on the bit to ensure
that it is tight in collet.
NOTE:

Only use .062 or 1/16 inch bits in system. These are rated for 120,000 RPM.
Use of any other size or shapes will result in turbine failure.

Now remove keys from turbine.

Changing Bits
WARNING: Never try to change bits while turbine is
spinning.
To remove bit from turbine, attach key to bottom
and top just like before. Now, while holding
bottom key still, turn top key COUNTER
CLOCKWISE enough to remove bit. Insert new bit
and reverse this process.
NOTE: If the collet lifts out with the bit, simply pull
apart and reinsert chuck back into the Ultra
Carver turbine. (1C)

When replacing bits, if they are dirty, just wipe off the bits with a cloth or fine brush.
Never put a bent bit into the turbine.
Artwork
You will always be looking for good sources of
designs. There are many sources of artwork you
can use. Ultra Carver has quite a nice selection to
choose from. Additional sources of artwork can
come from books, magazines, or clipart. Artwork
can be found all over but remember not to use
trademarked or copyright artwork. Keep a file with
different designs (i.e., floral, wildlife, holiday,
baby, Valentines Day, scroll work). You can also
combine designs. Like a wedding invitation and a
floral design.

Making Stencils
Your stencil system includes sheets of blank
stencil material and pieces of master artwork
copies. The stencil material is photo-sensitive,
and any one of your master artwork copies or any
other artwork can be copies onto the stencil sheet
with a photocopy machine.

1. To make a stencil copy, simply place the

artwork you wish to make a stencil of into the
top of the copy machine (where the picture is
taken). (1D)
2. Place the stencil film in the paper feeder tray
or use the single sheet feed slot, if available.
Film must be fed one sheet at a time.

3. After copied, stenciled artwork will appear where copies normally appear.
4. Peel off backing to expose adhesive back and stick to your surface. (2D)
5. Just trace lines. (3D)
It is important that you print on the nonadhesive side. To find the nonadhesive side,
hold the stencil sheet up to locate the side that reads copy other side. Photocopy
artwork onto opposite side. If you happen to copy on the wrong side, just reverse
sides and run through again. If a copy machine tends to run quite hot, dont do too
many copies at a time. The sheets tend to curl in extreme heat, but wont melt.
Engraving with the Ultra Carver
The Ultra Carver is not a mass removal tool, it is
designed for precision detail. Use your slow
speed tools for mass removal.
Rule #1
DO NOT press hard.
Rule #2
Always let the high speed do the engraving.
If you press too hard with the Ultra Carver, you
will ruin your turbine and wear out your Ultra
Carver bits fast.
The key to using the high speed system is to
use a very light touch.
If you have ever tried using a slower speed
electric drillyou have to force the tool. With the
Ultra Carver, its like writing with a pen. DO NOT
press hard.
While engraving always relax. Position your
hands and body so that you are very
comfortable. Take a few deep breaths and
begin.
NOTE:
Use the Ultra Carver like a pen. Turn at a
slight anglenot straight up and down.
Remember, you are using a vacuum debris
can be sucked up and through turbine. Keep
away from loose material.

Engraving on Glass
Glass is very easy to engraveit is just like drawing with a pen. Glass has been
etched on for hundreds of yearsbut not like this! You can add virtually any design or
logo just by tracing a line. Almost any glass can be engraved on.
1. Take a #17 diamond bit and insert it into the Ultra Carver.
2. Take any piece of glass and, with the system running, simply sign your name just
like you would with a pen and paper. Use a very light touch! Rememberlet the
high speed do the engraving!
3. Engrave some basic lines to get a feel for how the tips cut.
4. If you press too hard and slow, you might see the tip glow. If this happens, you
should use a lighter touch.
5. Try different tips. Just get comfortable with the system. You can use diamonds or
carbide on glass.
When engraving on glass, tilt the handpiece to the side, not straight up and down.
This will maximize your bit life.
NOTE:
Do not engrave on full champagne bottlesthey can explode.
Helpful Hint:
Sometimes cutting through the exclusive stenciling system can be hard on very
detailed designs. Try placing the artwork behind the glass. This will give a more
natural feel.

Engraving on Wood
Using the Ultra Carver on wood will take a little getting used to. The harder woods,
such as walnut, maple, cherry, work great. Do not engrave on oak, it is too choppy.
Let the high speed do the engraving. Your project should be stained and sealed
before you start engraving. With the turbine on its side, use the #2 diamond bit and
sign your name. Remember to engrave slower and with a light touch on wood.
After engraving, there might be some fuzzy edges. You can remove these fuzzy edges
very easily with 000 steel wooljust brush lightly. Clean off and rub a darker stain
into the engraved areas. This will contrast with the original stain. It will look great. Reseal with sealer of choice.
You can sand, smooth, shape, and detail like never before. Diamonds work great
you have precise control.

Engraving on Eggshells
Eggshell engraving is extremely
popular. They can be used as gifts,
wedding cake toppers, or
decorations.
Eggshells are very fragileUltra
Carver recommends using goose
eggs that have been cleaned and
sanitized. Goose, ostrich, emu,
turkey, and rhea eggs are much
stronger than regular chicken eggs.
To Clean Egg:
Drill hole using a #16 carbide bit on
top and bottom of eggblow out
inside. The next step is to pour one
ounce of bleach into a one gallon
bucket of water. Take a length of
dental floss and tie the egg to the
floss. Now, dip the egg into the
bucket for about 10 minutes. Pull
out, rinse out with water, let dry.
To begin engraving, use a #16
carbide bit. Turn on the Ultra Carver.
Just take and cut straight into the
shelljust enough to poke through
straight. Now, with just the tip poked
through, start guiding the Ultra Carver
through the shelllet the high speed
do the cutting. As you cut your lines,
you can go back and smooth out as
needed.
Be patient with the shellsthey will
break.
Try a pattern of circles of different
sizes throughout the shell. This
makes a great ornament.
You can use brass candle holders for
display stands.
NOTE:
Always use a dust mask and safety goggles.

Engraving on Cake Pans

Cake pans are one of the easiest projects to

engrave. To engrave on cake pans, use a #17
diamond bit.
Materials Needed:
Cake Pan
Photocopied Artwork
#17 Diamond Bit
Make a photocopy of your design onto regular
paper. (If you put the Ultra Carver exclusive
stencil system on an aluminum cake pan you
will have a very hard time getting it off.) Just
tape the pattern to the lid.
Begin engraving. The dot pattern is the
easiest to do. Start in the center of the dot to
make a small counterclockwise circular
motion, noting to fill out your dot. Remember,
soft touch. Let the speed do the engraving for you.
There are two types of lids: standard silver aluminum or colored lids. When you
engrave through the colored lids, the silver shines through.

Engraving Wedding Invitations on Glass Frame

This is an exciting, personalized gift!
Materials Needed:
8 x 10 Glass Frame
Black Spray Paint
#2 Diamond Bit
Artwork (wedding invitation)
Gold Rub n Buff
Stencil Sheet
Size up your wedding invitation to your
frame. You will generally have to enlarge
your artwork. Add any type of border you
like. Next, copy your design onto the Ultra
Carver exclusive stencil sheet. Next, peel off
backing and stick onto glass frame. Begin
engraving. Just trace your lines.
After engraving, remove the stencil sheet
with a straight edge razor. Inspect your lines.
If you need to you can touch up any areas
you might have missed.
Now you can add the gold inlay into the
lines. Just rub a little amount onto the glass
(rub with a soft cloth or paper towel in a circular motionthis makes sure the lines
are filled). Let the Rub n Buff dry one minute. Then, remove any excess with a
straight edge razor. Then use window cleaner to finish the clean up.
Next, clean the backside of the glass with window cleaner. Spray the back with a
gloss black paint. Let dry. Place back into frame. You now have a beautiful,
treasured keepsake.

Engraving Personalized Letters

This is a great idea for a treasured

keepsake. This is a way to take a letter
from a son or daughter, husband or wife,
etc., and make it into a sentimental
keepsake that you would like to display.

Engraving Perfume Bottles

You can put a special message on a

perfume bottle for that special someone
in your own handwriting. You can also
add Rub n Buff after finished.

Engraving Baby Bottles

Materials Needed:
Frame or Vase
Letter
Stencil
#2 Diamond Bit
Rub n Buff

Just choose your frame or vase. Size up

your letter. Photocopy onto the Ultra
Carver stencil paper. Place stencil onto
your frame and begin engraving with the
#2 diamond bit. Remember, all you have
to do is trace the lines. If desired, add
Rub n Buff after finished.

Engraving Glasses

Glass baby bottles only (this may take a

while to find)engrave with the date,
weight, and length. Add Rub n Buff. Fill
with pink or blue washcloth or tie with a
blue or pink ribbon.

Trouble Shooting

Never oil the Ultra Carver.

Brush off around turbine.
Let high speed do the cutting.

Turbine wobbles when I turn on.

Turn offcheck bit to see if it has
been damaged or bent. If so, replace
immediately.
Be sure the bit is tight in the chuck, if
not, retighten.
If none of these, turbine might be
worn out. Call Ultra Carver Customer
Service.
Connection to vacuum.
The longer the hose the slower the Ultra
Carver will turn.

Turbine stops spinning while engraving.

Do not push hard onto surfaces. This
will stop the turbine from spinning.
Do not squeeze the turbine housing
too tight. This will stop impellers from
spinning.
Should I oil the turbine?
NOany oil will collect dust and damage
bearings.
Can I use my slow speed bits in the Ultra Carver?
NOany bit not rated for 120,000 RPM or
larger than .062 or 1/16 inch will damage
the turbine.
