Magazine Analysis
This double page spread contains many different images that are scattered across the page, as these
all have bright, contrasting colours, they make it easy to catch the readers eye, instead of the text
next to them. Ariana Grande is pictured in all the photos as she is the main image of both pages, her
name is also put in bold in the main caption above the story. This allows readers to know the models
name for if they did not know before.
The colour scheme of this double page spread is mainly white, blue and pink as I find that these are
the three colours that stand out the most when glancing at the page. These all contrast with the
blank background so that the pictures stand out more. The text is positioned as if it is encased by all
the images and so the text is one of the last things that people read. It is also in a small size which
adds to its blend in the background.
Many facts are spread around the page; Arianas playlist, Get her look and Arianas teen vogue
takeover. These take up the blank space so that no attention is given to any bare parts of the page. A
common feature that is used in many magazines is the use of a drop cap- W. This introduces the
story and shows to the reader clearly where it starts.
A common feature of having one side a picture and the other side consist of text is used in this
double page spread which makes it seem more sophisticated, however not so unique. There is also
the use of a drop cap to let the reader know where the story starts. The tombstoning of the article on
the opposing side allows the article to follow the house style of magazines as this is a generic
convention. Both features create a smart sense, therefore, I think that I may incorporate it into my
magazine.
There is a faded image in the background which I find to be unique as it is not like other pictures
where there is just a white background, this makes both pages correspond well and sustains
awareness of the article. The by-lines in the middle of the page give reference to the writer,
photographer and stylist; this adds a business-like touch to the page. As the text is small, it is then
encased in a green box to bring emphasis to it and links the green to the shirt on the model on the
adjacent page. An artistic flare is added to the page by the creators adding in a wavy line down the
middle, separating the pages, furthermore, there is a black triangle in the corner to represent a page
turn, this shows that the creators think that this is an interesting page, therefore influencing readers.
The whole left of the article is taken up by an image which is a common convention of music
magazines. This also clearly establishes who the article is about and builds iconography. The name of
the artist is mentioned in the top right corner as is in a large, bold typeface and stands out to the
original writing in the article. It displays to the reader who the musician is without any confusion. A
short introduction is set next to the article to sum up the objective its approaching. The creators
have used a bolder and larger font to differentiate the two.
It is conventional for magazines to have a newspaper style of presentation. This layout makes it
easier to read and compose whilst also fitting in extra space for article information. The mast head
title also appears in the corner which makes it obvious to the reader who the magazine is from and
what brand it is. A drop cap is used behind the first column of the article and is contrasting to the
background and the photograph. This suits the audiences expectations as it is another convention
which is used in magazines. It is significant that readers can flick through the magazine freely without
any complications of pages, therefore, page numbers are usually requested in the corners or pages.
