Assignment #1 Prestressed Concrete

This document contains information about two precast and prestressed concrete beam design problems. It provides the geometry, material properties, and loading conditions for each beam. It asks the reader to compute the extreme fiber stresses in the concrete at transfer and service loads for the first beam, and the concrete fiber stresses at service load for the second beam. It also asks the reader to determine the cracking moments for each beam section.

Precast and Prestressed Concrete Structures
(CIVI 6011) Fall 2016
ASSIGNMENT NO.1
Due: Monday Sep 30, 2016
Question 1:
A simply supported pretensioned double T-beam for a floor has a span of 70 ft
(21.3 m) and the geometrical dimensions shown. It is subjected to a gravity liveload intensity WL = 480 plf (7 kN/m), and the prestressing tendon has an
eccentricity at midspan of ec = 19.96 in. (490 mm).
Compute the concrete extreme fiber stresses in this beam at transfer and at
service load, and verify whether they are within the permissible limits.

Section Properties

Material Properties:

Ac = 1185 in.2
Ig = 109621 in.4
Cb = 25.65 in.
Ct = 8.35 in.
Sb = 4274 in.3
St = 13128 in.3
WD = 1234 plf
82 psf
V/S = 2.45 in.

Concrete:
fc = 6000 psi
fci = 4800 psi
Prestressing steel:
16-1/2 in.-dia stress-relieved seven
wire strands
fpu = 270000 psi
fpi = 189000 psi
fpe = 145000 psi

Question 2:
A T-shaped simply supported beam has the cross section shown. It has a span of
36 ft (11 m), is loaded with a gravity live-load unit intensity WL = 2500 plf (36.5
kN/m), and is prestressed with twelve 1/2 in.-dia (twelve 12.7 mm-dia) seven-wire
stress-relived strands. Compute the concrete fiber stresses at service load.
Assume that the tendon eccentricity at midspan is ec = 9.6 in. (244 mm).Then
given that
fc = 5000 psi (34.5 MPa)
fpe = 165000 psi (1138 MPa)
