Methods For Shaft Voltage Measurement

The document describes 6 methods for measuring shaft voltage on electric machines: 1. Measure voltage across the shaft ends using a low resistance conductor and voltmeter. 2. Measure voltage across the bearing oil film using a low resistance path from shaft to frame and a voltmeter or ammeter. 3. Measure voltage across insulated bearings similarly to method 2 to detect voltage that could produce shaft currents if insulation fails. 4. Measure resistance of bearing insulation by connecting a voltmeter across the insulation with the oil film shorted. 5. Use a 500V megger for more sensitive testing of bearing insulation adequacy. 6. Test double-insulated bear

Methods for Shaft Voltage

Measurement
IEEE Std.-115, 1995 same as IEEE 112
Method 1: Across End Shafts
Method 2: Across bearing Oil Film, Uninsulated

Bearings
At rated speed connect a low resistance conductor from shaft to
the frame of the machine at one bearing, and a low range AC Volt
meter at the ( or a high range AC Ammeter) with low resistance
leads from the shaft to the frame at another bearing. Deflection
of instrument indicates presence of a voltage that may produce
shaft currents. With no deflection, either there is insufficient
voltage present or the bearing oil film is not acting as an
adequate Insulator.

Method 3: Across Bearing Insulation, Insulated

Bearings
Insulation in assumed to be in between bearing and frame of the
machine. To determine shaft voltage that produces shaft current,
a low resistance conductor is connected from the shaft to
uninsulated bearing in order to short circuit the oil film, and a low
range AC voltmeter (or a high range AC Ammeter) is connected
between shaft and frame successively at each insulated bearing.
Deflection of meter indicates the presence of voltage that will
produce shaft current if the bearing insulation is not present.

Method 4: Bearing Insulation

The resistance can be measured by connecting a low range AC
Voltmeter (or a high range AC Ammeter) across the insulation. A

low resistance conductor may be applied from the shaft to each

bearing to short the oil film. Deflection of the instrument, in this
case is evident that the insulation is at least partially effective. If
no deflection observed either the insulation is defective or there is
no shaft voltage present.

Method 5: Bearing Insulation

A 500 V megger could be used. This is much more sensitive and
may tend to reject insulation which is adequate to prevent the
small shaft voltage from causing injurious curents.

Method 6: Double Insulation

Bearings are provided with two layers of insulation with metallic
separator in between them. Test can be performed with machine
stationary or running. This test should be applied to various
parallel paths between shaft and frame of the machine.
