Epithelial Tissue

This document contains questions and answers about epithelial and connective tissues. It defines tissue as a group of cells with the same function and composition. The four major tissue types are epithelial, connective, skeletal, and muscle. Connective tissue is the most widely distributed in the body. Epithelial tissues form continuous sheets and have important functions like secretion, protection, and absorption. Ciliated epithelium is found in the respiratory tract and helps move particles along the body. Microvilli would be expected in tissues involved in absorption. For diffusion, a selectively permeable membrane and concentration difference are required. Goblet cells may be found in simple columnar epithelium. Stratified squamous epithelium is built to withstand friction. Connect

Epithelial & Connective Tissue Questions

1. Define tissue. List the four major types of tissue. Which of these types is
most widely distributed in the body?
A group of cells with same function and composition. Four major types: Epithelial,
connective, Skeletal, and muscle. The most common is connective.
2. Describe the general characteristics of epithelial tissue. List the most
important functions of epithelial tissues, and give examples of each.
No blood vessels, cells packed tightly together and form continuous sheets.
Has apical(free) and basement( bottom) surface
Functions are secretion (glands), protection(cavities), and absorbtion ( intestines)
3. Where is ciliated epithelium found, and what role does it play?
Respiratory tract, contains goblet cells that secrete mucous. The cilia
helps move particles along the body.
4. Which of the following would you expect to find in or on cells whose main
function is absorption?
a) Microvilli b) Cilia c) Gap junctions d) Secretory vesicles
5.
a)
b)
c)
d)
e)

For diffusion to occur, there must be

a selectively permeable membrane
equal amounts of solute
a concentration difference
some sort of carrier system
all of the above

6. In which of the following tissue types might you expect to find goblet
cells?
a) Simple cuboidal
b) Simple columnar
c) Simple squamous
d) Stratified squamous
e) Transitional

7.
a)
b)
c)
d)
e)

Which epithelium is built to withstand friction?

Simple squamous
Stratified squamous
Simple cuboidal
Simple columnar
Pseudostratified

8. What are the general structural characteristics of connective tissues?

What are the functions of connective tissues? How are their functions
reflected in their structures?
Composed of cell, fibers, extracellular matrix, and ground substance. The
extracellular matrix is made from the ground substances and the fibers,
which are made from a cell called a fibroblast. The amount of blood
vessels varies from none to a lot, depending of the location and function of
the cell. Their functions are to bind and support bones and muscles, also
protecting. Reflected by the fibers that they have.
9. Name a connective tissue with (1) a soft fluid matrix, and (2) a stony hard
matrix.
9/1. Tendons
9/2. Cartillage
10.What kind of connective tissue acts as a sponge, soaking up fluid when
edema occurs?
a) Areolar connective
b) Adipose connective
c) Dense irregular connective
d) Reticular connective
e) Vascular
11.What type of connective tissue prevents muscles from pulling away from
bones during contraction?
a) Dense connective
b) Areolar
c) Elastic connective
d) Hyaline cartilage
12.Spend the rest of the lesson doing some preliminary reading online about
Connective Tissue.
