Running Between Wickets
AWARENESS
Batters should work together as a pair
Look for runs from defensive as well as attacking
shots
Identify danger fielders
Identify weak fielders
Programme the gaps
ATTITUDE
Always looking for QUICK singles from ball one
Value every run
Puts fielders under pressure and creates errors- look
for overthrows
Aggressive running
Attempt to turn 1s into 2s and 3
Always looking for one more run than there is
BACKING UP NON-STRIKER
Keep bat in correct hand to FACE play
Stay balanced
Do not go too early
Get down the pitch as the ball is released
Anticipate a run every ball
Run clear of striker
GOOD CALLING
YES, NO or WAIT- LOUD & CLEAR
Who calls and why- generally the striker, unless nonsticker has a better view (usually behind the wicket
on the leg side).
On multiple runs, batter running to the DANGER end
should call
Accepting other call- Hesitation is usually the main
cause of run outs
GOOD RUNNING STYLE
Carry your bat in both arms/hands
Run straight and PUT EFFORT in/fast!
Change the bat in your hands before turning so you
can see ball/threat from fielder
GOOD TURNING TECHNIQUE
Small turning circle
Start to turn early, get low to improve braking,
sliding bat/touching bat just beyond crease.
Dont stretch too much to keep weight back in
direction of next turn
Ground the bat/slide the bat just beyond crease
Power away from turn- use CALL as you turn to
energise. Dont over run the crease!
