Cme Model Paper

This document contains 8 computational methods problems related to engineering. Problem 1 involves using multiple linear regression to fit data and compute coefficients. Problem 2 uses the Gauss-Jordan technique to solve a system of equations. Problem 3 uses the shooting method to solve a boundary value problem. Problem 4 uses a continuous Fourier series to approximate a saw tooth wave. Problem 5 develops a functional and uses the Rayleigh-Ritz method to solve a boundary value problem. Problem 6 uses finite differences to solve a partial differential equation. Problem 7 uses Liebmann's method to solve the temperature of a heated plate. Compute the coefficients, the standard error of the estimate, and the correlation coefficient.
2.

Use the Gauss-Jordan technique to solve the following system:

3x1 - 0.1x2 - 0.2x3 = 7.85
0.1 x1 + 7 x2 - 0.3 x3 = -19.3
0.3 x1 - 0.2 x2 + 10 x3 = 71.4

3.

Use the shooting method to solve

7d2y/dx2 - 2dy/dx - y + x = 0
with the boundary conditions y(0) = 5 and y(20) = 8.

4.

Use a continuous Fourier series to approximate the saw tooth wave in Fig. shown below.
Plot the first three terms along with the summation.

5.

Develop a functional for the boundary value problem d2u/dx2 = x , 0 < x < 1 with
u (0) = 0 and u (1) = 0. Use the same functional to solve the boundary value problem by
Rayleigh Ritz method using an approximating function u = kx (1-x) where k is a
constant.

6.

Use the Finite-Dierence method to approximate the solution to the elliptic partialdierential equation
2u/x2 + 2u/y2 =4, 0 <x< 1,
0 <y< 2;
2
u(x, 0) = x ,
u(x, 2) = (x 2)2,
0 x 1;
2
u(0,y) = y ,
u(1,y) =(y 1)2,
0 y 2.
Use h = k = 1/2 and compare the results to the actual solution u(x, y) = (x y)2.

7.

Use Liebmanns method to solve for the temperature of the square heated plate in Fig.
shown below, but with the upper boundary condition increased to 1200C and the left
boundary decreased to 600C. Use a relaxation factor of 1.2 and iterate to s = 1%.

8.

Use the explicit method to solve for the temperature distribution of a long, thin rod with a
length of 10 cm and the following values: k1 = 0.49 cal/(s. cm . 0C), x = 2 cm, and
t = 0.5 s. At t = 0, the temperature of the rod is zero and the boundary conditions are
fixed for all times at T(0) = 1000C and T(10) = 500C. Note that the rod is aluminum with
C = 0.2174 cal/(g . 0C) and = 2.7 g/cm3. Therefore, k = 0.49/(2.7 . 0.2174) = 0.835
cm2/s and = 0.835(0.1)/(2)2 = 0.020875.
