Computer Assisted Language Learning

Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) has developed through three main stages: structural, communicative, and integrative. The structural stage in the 1970s-1980s used mainframe computers for drill and practice to improve accuracy. The communicative stage of the 1980s-1990s used PCs for communicative exercises to improve fluency. The current integrative stage uses multimedia and the internet for authentic discourse and agency through content-based learning. Mobile Assisted Language Learning (MALL) has also emerged, using mobile technologies to facilitate language learning anywhere and overcome barriers of time and place.
