silenttruckwithitstelltalesmellofman.Theleadingelephantmerelyspreadherearsand
cautiouslybackedawaytakingtheyoungelephantswithher.
Asmallermotherelephantcontinuedtostandnexttothepool,however,swingingherlongtrunk
andswayingherheadfromsidetosidealwayskeepinganeyeonthetruck.Thebabyelephant
behindherhelduphishead,wavinghistrunktosamplethesuspicioussmellinthewind.The
motherelephantseemedtobeuncertainaboutwhethertocomeonandinvestigatethetruckor
tobackawaywiththeothers.Finallyshemadeuphermindandslowlyadvancedonthetruck.
Herearswerehalfout,andhertrunkmovedinquiringlytowardsthevehicleandthenbackunder
herstomachinarhythmicswing.
Iwasfascinatedbythiscloseapproach.NeverbeforehadIbeenabletoseethehairiness
aroundthejaw,norsmellthewarmscentofelephantwhichnowreachmeinconcentrated
waves.Themotherelephant'sstepswereslowbutdetermined,andbroughthertowithina
coupleofmetresofme.
Shegavetheimpressionofbeingintenselycuriousaboutthismetalobjectwhichhadappeared
inherworldandbehavedasifitwereitselfananimal.Iwonderedhowfarshewouldacceptthe
situationand,ifafterallthecenturiesofmenkillingelephants,shewouldeverallowmeto
approachheronfoot.Tobeabletomovefreelyamongtheelephantswithouttheirmindingwas
anexcitingthought,butIcertainlydidnotexpectitwouldeverbepossible.
