Graphing Quadratic Functions

Learning Objectives:
1.

Understand the definition of a quadratic function: Let a , b ,c be real numbers


with a not equal to zero then the function f ( x )=a x 2 +bx +c is a quadratic function.

2. Discover the shape of the graph of a quadratic function which is a special U-shaped
curve called a parabola and notice the symmetry with respect to a line called the axis of
symmetry. Label the point where the axis of symmetry intersects the parabola as the
vertex, which is also called the relative minimum if a > 0 or relative maximum if a < 0.
3. Remember that when sketching the graph of f ( x )=a x 2 , it is helpful to use the graph
of y=x 2 as a reference. Observe that when the value of a > 1, the graph of
y=f ( x ) =a x2 is a vertical stretch from y=x 2 and when 0 < a < 1 the graph
y=f ( x ) =a x2 is a vertical shrink of the graph of y=x 2 .
4. Analyze the graph of y=a x 2 for a=3,2,1,1, 2,3. What can you conclude
about the parabola when a < 0 and when a > 0? Students will conclude that when a < 0,
the graph opens down and when a > 0, the graph opens up.
5. Analyze the graph of y=( xh)2 with h = -4, -2, 2 and 4. How does this value of h
affect the graph? Students will observe and understand that the graphs of y=( x h)2
create horizontal shifts in the opposite direction of the positive or negative sign.
6. Analyze by using a graphing utility to graph y=x 2 +k with k = -4, -2, 2, and 4. How
does the value of k affect the graph? Students will observe and understand that the
graphs of y=x 2 c create vertical shifts.
7. Observe and discover that writing the function of f ( x )=a x 2 +bx +c in Vertex Form
f ( x )=a ( xh)2+ k is especially convenient for sketching a parabola because it
identifies the vertex of the parabola as (h, k).
